Hate to litter the tractor board with another OT, but figure you fellas would be able to help... Need to replace the old Chevy. The family all won't fit in anymore. Looking at the Dodge quads because they're not as long as my house and the wife would be driving alot. Have read here that Dodge autos trannys are not that great. Do they all have questionable reliability? My understanding is the Cummins has a 4 spd and the gas has a 5 spd. Is the 5 spd relatively new? I'm interested in mostly in 2002-2004 years. Thanks, jim

I knew at least 4 people with half ton Dodges that shelled out the automatics within 36000 to 60000 miles. None of them did any heavy towing. I was told that there was a later recall on them. Not sure what years they were. Either started with 2000 or a little later. About $3500 to replace. My brother just had his 35000 mile service and shortly after it went out. He was the only one of the 4 that didn't buy another Dodge. I guess they started making better ones later. I have a 94 1/2 ton with 318 that my neighbor bought new and I had to get a $50 part replaced to make it shift correctly from 2nd to drive without winding it up. It has 145000 on it now.

Hi, I am a Dodge and Chevrolet dealer. So I have quite a bit of understanding of the newer Dodge and GM trannies. First off, if you go with a Dodge diesel, get one that was built after January 1st 2003, if you do, you'll get the new and much improved 48re trans instead of the old and tired 47re. The 48re is so much heavier built internally it doesn't compare at all to the 47re of the previous models. We have sold a lot of the Dodge/Cummins with the 48re, I have one customer who is a hotshot trucker who has an 04' that has over 230k hard pulling miles on it and the tranny has never been touched besides having two fluid changes. Also, the 5-45rfe that comes with hemi gas engine is a super durable tranny. We have several of those running in some real severe circumstances and have had no failure's out of those either. The older Dodge tranny's like the 47re, 47rh, 46re, 46rh really were pretty crummy. But you can't compare those to what we are selling today. They don't even share any of the same parts. WE are coming out with a new heavy duty 6-speed automatic trans to go behind the diesels this fall that is going to be really good to.

Whoever told you Dodge transmissions are not that great has never had one or was someone mentioned on one of the other posts. A lot of problems stem from buying a truck that is too light and geared wrong for what they get used for.
I have a 92 Dodge diesel with 240,000 miles on it. I personally put over 130,000 mile on it and have had no problems with the automatic transmission. I do pull loads on the trailer of 6500 pounds or more quite often. I have hauled my 12,000 lb tractor although I don"t recomend doing it.

The Dodge auots aren't anything special but really up until GM started using the Allison there wasn't anything that held up very well in the diesel pickups. The good thing about the Dodge autos is they are pretty easy to upgrade to a near bullet proof transmission. I have a '99 2500 quad cab long box Cummins with the auto and 3:55 gears and when my transmission goes I'm going to get a rebuilt one from the link below.

I have a 1996 Ram 2500 4x4 360 gas with 160,000 miles on it and the auto tranny still works. I have pulled some heavy loads with it. I am getting some occasional upshift problems from 2nd to 3rd so I may be on borrowed time.

You'd probable find the best information if you went and looked on dieseltruckresource.com There are lots of knowledgable people on there that talk just about dodge trucks. I started researching dodge and chevrolet before I made my purchase. They gave me all the clues to look for and it really swayed my decision. I have a 01 dodge 2500 cummmins auto and I love it. It pulls a gooseneck with my super m on it that weighs 8100 lbs no problem.

I have worked on a lot automatics and have found that most failures are caused by the nut that holds the steering wheel.
