There`s a amish family moved in down the road and I`ve baled his hay and plowed his garden and he needs a ride here and there . Yesterday I took them to church which was a 230 mile round trip , thats not just a ride to the store !! Was wandering if anybody here hauls them around and how you charge . It`s not just mileage , I had a 4 hour wait where I could`nt find much to do . Dont want more than it`s worth and dont want to hurt him but I could have got a few things done yesterday .

Never, ever, ever, ever buy a used horse or cook stove from an Amishman. It will be used up for sure. That's why he is selling it. Also, never ever, ever let an Amishman hunt on your property. When you come home there will be nothing moving or living on your propery. The Amish around here in Ohio are the biggest bunch of hypocrits imaginable. They won't use electricity on their own property but they have no problems using it on your propery when building something for you. Also they have no qualms in riding in a vehicle but they usually don't drive themselves. They will also ride in a back-slider's vehicle. They will use gasoline engines to drive power tools on their own property disregarding the fact that tons of electricity was used to produce the gasoline let alone the power tools. They will use a tractor (the ones who don't use horses anymore) to drive to town but not a car. I've seen them driving an old tractor with a buggy body mounted on it on the highways. Hypocrits for sure.

My coworker drives the amish. He charges by the mile, then $5 an hour to wait. It doesnt seem worth it to me. The problem he has is if he takes them to a store and he goes in to look around they dont want to pay him for waiting since he was "shopping" too. They dont understand that the only reason he is in the store is to pass the waiting time faster.

I'll bet he and his friends had a good laugh at the "english" he conned into waiting around for 4 hours.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but I grew up around them and there is nothing an Amishman likes better than to take advantage of a well-meaning, but naive, "english". It's considered by them to be a big joke.

You need to get control of the situation now, or you will be treated like one of their horses.

I don't know what state you are in, but here in Pennsylvania if you haul them for money you are considered to be a taxi for hire and you must register with the state Public Utility Commission.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Amish hater, in fact Amish have some qualities I admire, but I also have to be a realist about them too.

Please report back in 6 months after you figure out he's nothing but a leach. I laugh at the people that move in around here saying the Amish are so great. In about 6 months to a year I can't print what they say about them.

You just need to learn to say no! The Amish in our area are generally good people but they will take advantage of you if you give them an inch. My parents once gave the neighbor permission to fish in their pond. A couple weeks later they came home to find about 70(yes 70) amish people fishing. When Dad tried to run them off they got mad and said they had permission and wouldn"t leave till Dad called the sheriff out. They literally destroyed the fish population in that pond for a couple years. Also Mom had an amish girl that she befriended and would run to town and let her use the phone. When the rest of the amish in the area found out they constantly hassled my parents for rides and to come into my parents house to use the phone. They acted like it was their right to have my parents cater to them. Dad also catches them hunting on his land year around and "borrowing" his old farm equipment constantly without permission. They act like its a commune and everything is community property. If I was you I would figure a price that covered your time, fuel, and vehicle cost and not worry about how much it is. They will either pay it or find someone else to haul them around. Either way you will have made your point that you won"t let them walk on you.

I agree. In general the Amish are good people and much of their life is to be admired especially by farm folk. But, consider that they do not drive or have phones, but its ok to use them? To me that means they are just using the system and laughing at their own rules or religion whichever denies the modern tool. We have them locally and the same things happen around here. But they are great to befriend you if you need help.

I`m not one to be taken , as it has been he has been paying very well for all services . I also feel they use the system sota like when a guy says he quit smoking but realy just quit buying smokes and his buddys support his habit . I`m not talking them up but I have been payed well so far , soninlaw drives and works for a pollbarn crew and gets paid twice what he would on a regular crew .
