I have a 1954 40c crawler that will start on starting fluid but then dies out. When I try to start it using just the carb the plugs never get wet, telling me that its not getting gas to the cyls. I have removed and cleaned the carb and it did not help. It was running fine one day and would not start the next.

Or there may be a leak into the inlet manifold, or a valve is not seating properly, allowing draught across the carb to be reduced.

Do you have a good flow of gas out the fuel line from the tank?? Do you have a good steady flow of gas out the drain plug on the carb?? If you don't have on either place then you need to clean up the fuel system.
