I whacked a cut off stump THAT I KNEW WAS THERE AND STILL HIT IT and broke one of my blades on my little 4' brush hog. Wifey is PO'd because I told her I'd do her mowing when I got done with mine first and of course never made it due to the broken blade.

I'll end up mooching the big a$$ wrenches that I don't have to get the broken blade off - but where do you guys / gals recommend me looking for new replacement blades? I believe it is a Sunbeam rotary cutter at least 15 years old and a super little cutter. I looked it over and there are no i.d. tags that I can see. I have the broken blade (broke right at the hole) and can measure it. Thanks for the advice.

I broke one several years ago when I was mowing pasture. Blade came out the front and went through the back tire. Fluid everywhere. Need to check blades for cracks, fatigue espescilly if they are long blades and get a lot of abuse.

Besides the repair or replacement o fthe blades.. I'm wondering why your shear pin or slip clutch didn't activate.. breaking a blade has got to be a huge shock event to the system.. One would assume that the pin/clutch would have kicked in..

Here is my plan. I'll go over to TSC tomorrow and see if I can match the blade. I'll buy two of the closest match and replace both at the same time. If I can't find a match, I'll order them. If ordering takes forever - I'll remove both blades, weld the broken blade and grind either or until they weigh the same. I've talked to some guys that have welded blades with mixed results - most say they have had few problems - but they are pretty careful where they are mowing and don't cut much heavy brush OR STUMPS. I could kick myself too because I had my chainsaw right there and told myself I'd better ground cut it low because it was too high to mow over, but I didn't want to take a chance of grounding my fresh chain so I didn't cut it. Now I wish I would have. Resharpening a chain is alot quicker than replacing brush hog blades. Anyway, I'll post back with my experience. Thanks to all.

I weld lots of things. These blades are one of the things that I dare not weld. Much, much, too dangerous.

Not really since it doesn't matter weither your weld broke or if the blade was brand new and it broke, the pieces are gonna fly just the same. I have had pretty good luck welding them.

Balance Smalance. If you still have both pieces, just weld it back together. Sounds to me like you broke it so close to the hub the repair can't cause it to be 'out of balance' enough to make much difference anyway. What are we talking about here? A Space shuttle? Go for it.

ps..... BUY a SET of blades for back-up NOW. ONE broken blade SHOULD tell you something.

Take the good blade off. Go down to the local supply house of your choice, and find one on the shelf that matches it. There are so many different blades out there that, without specific #'s it is nearly impossible to get the correct blade. As marlowe says you will have to buy a pair of them so they will be "balanced" when you put them on. when

But I went on the cheap and just welded the broken pieces back together, sure it vibrated pretty good, but it worked.

When you do that take both blades and put them on some scales one at a time, and balance them. Walla! Vibration gone. Just like majic.

tractor supply has some blades but you will have to match them up and you will have to buy two because they have to be the same wt. your old on is most likley wore down so it will be lighter then a new on they shoud be replaced as pairs

I too would recommend buying the blades in pairs but not because of balance. As long is each blade is balanced end to end it makes no difference to the other blade.

He's talking about a brush hog not a finish mower.

Success - I found a decent match for the blades at the local Tractor Supply (p/n 51118 $41 for a set). They are for a King Kutter but matched all the measurements OK. Toughest part was getting the stump jumper plate down and loosening the two 1" bolts with the nylon nuts. Luckily my brother had a 3/4" drive set which made the job easier. Got everything hooked back up and tested it out. Back to normal - everything is working OK. Soundguy, I did break the shear bolt too - I didn't mention it earlier, probably saved the gearbox. Thanks for all the advice and I went out and ground cut the stump too!
