I have a 92 Chevy 3500 w/454/4L80E that doesn't seem to want to lock the converter tight in drive.Tries to lock up, but doesn't seem to according to my temp gauge. Locks up tight in o/d though. If I am pulling my trailer empty in o/d and start up a big hill, it will shift from o/d locked up straight to 3rd unlocked and throws some kind of code to the computer that wont allow it to shift up any farther than 3rd unlocked untill you reset the computer by turning ign switch on 45 sec. off 45 sec. until it resets itself. I haven't found anyone who can explain this one to me yet. I'm not sure whether it is modulator, wiring, computer or what it is. I thought if anyone here had any suggestions or past experiences I might learn something before I stumbled blindly into it myself! LOL Mark

Try a manual test switch wired in through the brake switch safety circuit to the tcc. When you touch the brake pedal the torque has to unlock. You can then try locking her up in direct drive and see what happens. Is there a tach in your truck? Watching the tack & speedo together will tell you lots. Installing a shift kit never hurt even an electronic trans. The extra line pressure will help ensure the clutch packs in the trans and locking torque won't slip. As long as they are not already burnt.

Next step is to check the solenoids inside the transmission,Particulary the TCC solenoid (Torque converter clutch)for open windings or sludge buildup in valves..... ....

Mugg,

I've worked on the silly things since forever.

How hot is it running on your gauge? Contrary to what you might have heard in the coffee shop, those things run hot. 180 to 225 degrees in the summertime is not uncommon at all.

Don't know of any code that will block out 4th or lock. In fact, it is designed to lock with heat to disapate it.

Is there any way you can find out what code it is throwing (if in fact it is actually throwing a code)?

When was the last time you changed that fuel filter (assuming it is gas)? Plugged fuel filters cause more problems with GM transmissions than you can imagine.

Hope you get it straightened out,

Allan

Thanks for the replies, guys. I don't think it's a solenoid problem, as it locks tight in o/d. I know this because when the trailer is loaded, I only use drive except when i get a big downhill stretch where i can slip 'er in o/d and watch the heat gauge drop like a rock when the converter locks up. when left in 3rd, the gauge doesn't come down nearly as fast, and you can tell it's just not in tight. Allen, the silly 'ol thing did the same trick before and after fuel filter changes. Buddy of mine has the code reader and said that after it does it's out of o/d trick that there were too many codes in it to pinpoint any 1 problem. If not for the gauge and 28,000 GVW cooler, I would have cremated the tranny long ago. I have seen 250 on it before, will run 180-190 when towing my camper when I can run in o/d. I'm pulling a heck of a load when I have temp issues. My dad has an almost identical set-up, so I have something to compare mine to. I'm just kind of stumped. I built my own Powerglide drag race tranny's so I have a working knowledge of the care and feeding of the animal.I guess if it comes down to it, I'll tear into it myself and see what I can screw up!LOL Mark

Mark,

That erratic shift kinda sounds like the wiring loom.

Pull the connector off at the tranny end and see if there is transmission fluid in it. There was a service bulletin for that back in the 90s and the transmission end of the cable had to be replaced.

We found out later that it was the fluid causin' the trouble. If there is fluid in the connector, just clean it out with some brake clean and screw it back together.

If there is no fluid in that connector, look for a "ratio error" code, which tells you that the tranny is trying to go south on ya. However, that "multiple code" thing really points to a communication problem between the tranny and the ECM.

No, there is nothing wrong with the shift solenoids or the converter lock up; they don't magically cure themselves with a key cycle.

Your temps are right on the money. At 250 degrees, I pull 'er over for a cool-down. Is that clutch hub on the water pump okay? Are your electric fans working as they should (454 engine)?

I assume you have changed the tranny filter as well?

Also, a bad body/engine electrical ground will absolutely drive these things nuts. Make sure the little "star washers" are in place and good and tight.

Hope ya get 'er,

Allan
