There is a 1982 GMC C6500 dump truck that just went up for sale down the road from me. It has a 5-speed tranny and a 369 gas motor. I need your opinions on this truck, good and/or bad before I might buy it.

The township road commissioner I used to work for used Chevy C65's, the Chevy version of the GMC 6500. He had a '67 and I think it was a '74....There were MANY options available as far as transmissions, axle capacities, etc. As long as this truck has some of the good parts (5 spoke cast steel wheels as opposed to steel discs, or Dayton's as opposed to BUDD's) and the truck was geared correctly for the way it was used and not abused they can do a good job and hold up. The Township plowed snow with both these trucks with 14 ft angle plows or 12 ft V-plows.....and the '67 ended up under a Krause chip/sand spreader box and I weighed a load of chips once.....I was pushing 24,000# on a single axle rated 33,000# gross. The '74 dumptruck had lower numerical axle ratios and was a much better road truck but it sure paid the price in pulling power. My normal load with that truck was 16,000# net..... but I did turn in a couple scale tickets for 18,000-19,000# when the loader operator got a little carried away!

The 366 was Ok if you can afford to feed it. I think you'd be time and money ahead to go buy a decent diesel powered truck if you're planing to do any amnout of work. There's lots of cheap diesels out there too.

probably you mean a 366 motor. There is no 369. The 366 doesn't get much respect but it is a tough little motor.

We used to have a C6500 under a boom truck and it was a piece of junk. Hope this helps.
