Have a bunch of thistles growing in my pasture. need a herbicide that I can spot spray on them that will be safe for the sheep and goat that are in the pasture. Anyone with experience along these lines?

Hi Ray! Did Linda go to the Flemish specialty show in Hillsdale two weekends ago?

Nope, Dave - Thet was the same weekend as the Ionia show, put on by West Michigan Club - Linda was there all weekend, as a member of the club. Had to stay until Sunday for cleanup and lockup.
She's planning on going to the show in Charlotte next weekend.

Ray,
If you have a TSC nearby go and check the label on the PBI Gorden Pasture Pro it is safe for horses but I do not know about sheep and goats.

If you're gonna spray them, hit them with a molasses/water solution, then your animals will eat them. After awhile they will recognize the plant and eat it because they think it will taste like the last one.
Don't use the nasty unless you absolutely have to- molasses is cheaper anyway.

I usually let my goats eat them! If the thistles are up and "headed out" it is to late to spray them. Best thing is to use a corn knife to cut the heads (collect them in a bucket) and let the rest go.

My sheep are picky - won't eat the thistles, tell me they hurt their mouths! One goat I have in that pasture is an old, gereatric, buck Angora. He says he doesn't like thistles either!

Hmmmmm ....my goats will devour thistles and cedar trees before they eat the grass!

Check the label on 2,4-D or Weedmaster(that's the safest stuff I know of but I'm not sure can graze it while applying it.), but if you chop the thistles, I'll bet the goats will eat them. I'm surprised they haven't allready. You must have a lot of grass so their finding that more palatable.
