Hi Guys,

In the field by 4:30 this morning. Raked and baled 33 acres of this new seeding alfalfa and done by 10 am.

Got 48 bales off the patch, but the good news is that I don't have to plow it up this fall like I had originally thought. Darned alfalfa is there; just needs a darned good drink is all.

Not even gonna bother with the grass this year; not enough there to go after. So, if you guys would send an inch of rain my way, I'll get the combine ready for the oats. No rain, and I'll be mowin' that stuff down too. :>(

I'd love to send you alot of this rain the north east has gotten, and guess what?, it's going to rain for another few days now. Done almost nothing but rain this spring/summer. I still haven't got my garden planted and farmers are going to have a bad year due to the weather, too much rain and it's been cold so stuff isn't growing too well. Hay on the other hand is doing real well, and it's time to cut it, but it's raining yet again so I'll have to let it sit for now and hope I can get it sometime next week, but I got to have 3-4 days of nice drying weather to get it. Hey, how come you were able to start baling at 4:30, wasn't there a heavy dew on it?.

Hi Jon,

We need it tough and damp to bale out here because the area is so dry. If ya bale when the hay is completely dry it just crumbles like post tosties.

So what we do, is make sure the hay has cured, then grab the first dew or "near dew" that comes along.

We do edible beans the same way. Cut and windrow with the dew and then combine in the heat of the day.

Oh, so thats your method. Weather never cooperates long enough to make hay thats too dry around here, and never has, course we often don't get the heat you do.

It's always a good feeling to be done. If your bored now you can come up and help me hay. Baled my first 25 acres yesterday and the high priced baler broke wrapping the last bale. Not to bad just took a little welding. Got 30 acres down getting washed right now, weather man says 2 inches tonight and 140 left to cut.

You can have some of our water, Allan. We had some 90o weather in May that caused our grass to head out early and now the rainy showery weather has been with us for about three weeks and any body who tried to hay got a soggy cutting. My hay is over mature but it's too wet to cut it. (we got an inch of rain yesterday, with 0.4 in less than a half hour in a real frog drownder!) Oh well, that how it is when you depend on the weather!
All that hard work you did on your equipment paid off 'cuz it looks like you got 'er done with no breakdowns.

Hi Jer,

What part of Montana anyway? Been all over that state at one time 'er another and with one wife 'er another. :>)

Yeah, the only trouble I had was with that darned hay sled, but that was my own fault. Had 'er stuck in the ground while trying to unload and poped two chains. :>(

However, I might consider buying a $30K or $40K baler instead of using this old $500 junker. NOT!

Hit the dew this morning and didn't loose a leaf 'til I was tryin' to get to the end of the very last windrow and pushed too much in 'er on that last bale. Poped the shear bolt and every stuff. Other than that, she ran like a new one. :>)

The Mission Valley, just NE of St. Ignatius. Now that the hayin' is done for awhile you can easily put in a new shear pin, check 'er over and make some adjustments, and be ready for a second cuttin'.
I always enjoy your equpment "reports", Allan.

Bet it feels good to be done with that and even more than a bale to acre so wasn't all bad. Most are laying the oats down here now on circles for dairy hay. A beef cow person can't even buy them for what they are probably asking this year so might be better than combining them unless you got a real good seed contract but then you got to worry about that ice from the sky too.
