How much is the small sqare bales (50-60 lbs) going for this year ? Ive got some good Bermuda Grass . I'm in S.W. Tn. I sold my first cutting for $1.50....and I'm thinking $2.50 for the future cuttings. Am I in the ballpark at all ? These fuel prices are eating my lunch.

My prices for alfalfa and alfalfa-orchardgrass hay are going up. I am paying 60% more for Diesel, Twine price rose 25%, fertilizer bill this year was up another 8%, and I just had a catastrophic break on my mower conditioner.

My repeat customers like my hay and pay what I ask. I am STARTING at $120/ton (roughly $3.00/bale) and going from there.

If it goes in the barn, prices is up $10/ton.

Jim

It all depends on location and who you are selling it to. Here in SE Iowa If you can get 2.50 - 3.00 for squares of alfalfa you are doing good, 1500#++ netwrapped rounds of alfalfa $35 bucks seems to be about all you can get locally. My dad has a farm and feed store in MA. seldom sells anything for less than $5 a bale and it is at $7.50 now. I think most all hay should be worth atleast $3.50 a bale by time you figure your cost...Jim

I baled hay for the neighbor this spring in southern WI. I charged a buck a bale, same as last year. With fuel beig high, and twine up from last year I think I kinda lost my a$$ on the deal. Exspecially when you figure the $60 in bearing for the thrower. At least I can bale mine for free.

Cowman can you explain that pricing to a novice? What is RFV? Is that nutritional content? And is the price per ton? I baled my WHOLE ACRE and got 50 bales, that's mostly fescue with some orchard grass and red clover mixed in. My next door neighbor gave me $2 a bale for it so I was happy, figured I made about $20 an hour. All the tight turns in that little plot eats up the time but I still have fun. It's nice when you do it just 'cause you want to.

RFV Relative Feed Value
It's an index they use to establish grades.
yes, prices are per ton.

Anything under $4.00 isn't worth starting the tractor for by the time you figure the cost of fuel, your time and machinery wear and tear. $2.00-$2.50 is 1980's prices. Might better go fishing.

I am up here in Northwest Tn and if you can get $3 a bale for clean good bermuda your lucky or found a customer who knows what it costs to bale hay. We are selling good orchard grass for $2.50 a bale and probably bermuda for $3. Round bales? heck around here is you get $20 a bale for good stuff your lucky.

I think everyone has a tractor and baler this year. :) If it isn't sold we're not cutting it. Can't get any more for it now than we could 3 years ago when fuel was $1 or less a gallon and string was about half what it is now.

Only good thing about it all is that I have more time to ride my motorcycle or go to tractor shows this year.

I think you are in the ballpark. It all depends on what people are paying down that way. Up here (Southern Wisconsin), you will see $2.00 to $2.75 for good grass hay (timothy, orchard, clover, etc.) Watch the local adds and get an idea of where everyone else is at, and if you feel your hay is better or worse...adjust your sell price accordingly.

Good luck!

Billy

My father-in-law just finished his haying for the spring. He was telling me that the sq bales are running around $3.50, (orchard grass- western NC) and I think it was around 20$ for the same in round bales. Interestingly he said that the cost of tractor, rake, baler, fuel, wear and tear and labor, he would be better off to buy (I guess at these prices) but noone would sell the quantity he needed, so he continues to cut his own. (he got maybe 400 round/750 square. He has maybe 25 horses/75 cows on 60 acres.
