I have just bought a Yanmar 1820D diesel tractor and notice when starting I first turn the key so the glow plug light is on for about 10- 15 sec. I then try to start it but when turning the key, the red engine light comes on but it does not crank the engine over. After repeted attempts (4-5) it will finally turn the engine over and start. Is this normal or should I be looking at the starter or the starting solinoid?

I'd be surprised if you actually had glow plugs.... but rather have thermostart. On some units you have to manually add fuel to the thermostart bowl, on others it draws from the main fuel supply automatically...

In any case.. get a jumper wire and check to see if it is your switch, or the solenoid..( or starter ).

On my JD750 (A Yanmar in JD paint) I have to twiddle the gearshift lever to get it to start, the neutral safety switch is REAL sensitive.

Sometimes have to pull up on the PTO lever too, just been too lazy to adjust the switch. I think of it as Theft Prevention...
