Can someone please explain to me why I do this. I got my hay baled today w/ out to much trouble. I'm a one man show with just a truck, no hay racks. Tonight I was able to borrow the nieghbor's trailer to deliver about half of the goods tomorrow . The guy calls me tonight and says they aren't gonna need the hay!!! The other half was possibly gonna go to a friend's mom, but last time she wanted pure alfalfa for her horses, not the mostly grass mix I have. So basically I have 160-170 bales on my hands with no place to store them and half are on a trailer I said I'd return tomorrow afternoon. If I were feeding this hay to animals of my own it'd be differant, but with no place to store them in out of Iowa's wierd weather, I might as well sell my 3 square balers (2 good, 1 parts w/ lots of new parts) and switch to round bales. So, can someone explain to me why I do this stuff? Don't get me wrong, I love doing it, but the hassle of getting the hay off the place for what little I get has got me thinking...

Thanks everyone for letting me rant alittle. I spent yesterday afternoon restacking onto some pallets I have, looks like I'm going to make a run to town to get another good tarp or two. The two tarps I have now will only cover the top, don't cover the sides very much. I guess I'll just cover up as best I can and see what happens. Thanks again everyone.

What do you mean, selling? All you have to do is stack it where it can't be seen from the house and some dark night it will disappear, cover and all.

Rich, been there done that n got the T Shirt. Like I tell my much younger buddy now when I help him make hay and things go bad, "I quit farming once before n I can sure do it again" lol

If you wonder why yo do that, listen to some Jimmy Buffett music..... .

"If you ever wonder why you ride the carousel, you do it for the stories you can tell"

"If it all blows up and goes to H _ _ _, think of all the stories we can tell"

Never could figure out why anyone would want big rounders! I like to feed my hay, not waste it! Oh well - it's all in what you have room for, time, for, machinery for, and are used to. Use what works for you!

Because your can store them in the hay loft, your 13 yer old daughter can handle them, they make "sheafs" that fit in the horse hay feeders, they sell for twice a much per ton as round bales, (I could on for awhile). If you're trying to make money haying, always remember: 1, Horse people want small square bales that are DRY- you can't cheat and put them up a little tough, like you can rounds; 2, Horse people generally have more money than sense, and will pay you well for your trouble.

'Cause you can handle them without a machine.I suppose you're thinking of large squares? Not too popular on farms around here.

Because they sell the best period in my market. Hay and straw. Large rounds are second but you don't really get near value to me anyway, and they must be net wrapped. large squares so far can't give them away. Way to much spoilage in one I have seen also.

There are a lot of hay barns empty in Iowa.

Lack of livestock.

You might call a couple of neighbors to see if you can store hay there.

You can get more for it in the winter any way.

A good number of pallets and a tarp and then in the winter you can get top dollor for what you have. Yep BTDT and its a pain. I do mostly rounds any more but not because of your problem buy because I can't pick up blaes any more
