Almost Un-Stuck Piston

Alright, I got one of the pistons out of my JD block without a problem. Three months soaking in ATF and a hydraulic shop press had it out easily. The other one is being tough however. It wasn't soaking in ATF because of a giant hole in the cylinder wall. I put the press to it and it popped loose surprisingly. It sounded like a shotgun going off and scared the crap outta me. It moved down the bore about a half inch, but now I can't get it to budge. I think the rust and/or rings are binding against the cylinder wall. The hole in the cylinder might have something to do with it as well. Right now it's sitting in the press with pressure and it's soaking in ATF. Anyone have any tips for this half-stuck piston. BTW, it's from a 1949 John Deere B. Thanks for any help.

You need a standard hydraulic ram and you just vent the end that you are not using. You can purchase a vent to install in the unused fitting to keep dirt, etc. from entering the ram and scoring the cylinder. HTH

A single-acting cylinder will not work well for a top link.

I guess Im missing something,if the block has a hole in it and all this pressing and stuck pistons are usually no good what are you gonna reuse?Maybe could see this if it was something super rare you couldnt find anymore, but a JD-B?

Well, the other piston is very usable, and there is very little scoring/scratches on what I can see of the stuck one. I'd rather spend time getting them out instead of spending money just getting new ones. Money's more expensive ; ) I might see if my local machine shop can bore out and put a sleeve in the broken cylinder, too. I'm fairly confident I can get that piston out without destroying it.

I just got a piston loose in a one cylinder Fairbanks Morse engine that had been stuck for at least 20 years. I soaked it with ATF and chainsaw gas mix for over a month. It is a headless engine, so I could not get to the top of the piston.
I plumbed a grease fitting into the spark plug hole after filling the engine with ATF. After four pumps of my grease gun the flywheel started turning. Talk about a good feeling. The engine is over 90 years old by the way.

If you have enough of good bore above the piston set the block upright and pour in diesel fuel and light it.It will only surface burn and it will heat the block enough that some of the fuel will soften the rust and free the piston. You may have to do it several times. Let it cool before you try and press. Earl

Got a HOT water high pressure washer ? I had to heat the block on one once and just stuck the wand in the water jacket and let it heat away.

I got another half an inch!! It popped again, and this time much more violent. The 30 Ton jack jumped out of the press and punched a hole in the bag of fertilizer next to me. My ears were ringing and my hands shook for a few minutes from the shock of that movement. (Insert joke about eating food that doesn't agree with me.) Anyway, if I can get a half inch a day, I'll be sittin' pretty.

Someone a week or so ago suggested drilling some {large?} holes in the piston if you think it is unusable. This might relieve the pressure

Is it possible to move the piston back the other way? Sometimes you need to work them back and forth.

Yes, that suggestion was given to me earlier. Thing is though, I'd have to push on the connecting rod...which would be tough to do. I might try it tonight though.

a piece of tubing should let the rod pass through!

Use a block of wood so you don't damage the rod, and use patience, these things can be very frustrating.
