V-8 conversion

I have inherited a small block Chevy V-8. It's a 1968 model with only 3000 miles on it. It was taken out of a wreck and "moth-balled". It so happens that I am in need of a tractor heavy enough to handle 1000 pound round bales, but I have limited funds.

I was thinking that if there is a tractor that would fairly easily convert to the V-8, maybe I could use the engine and have a useable tractor for not too much money.

Does anyone know if there is a tractor that is convertible without too much trouble? Maybe I could find one with a blown engine for not much money.

Is this more trouble/expense than it's worth? Am I crazy for considering it? Does anyone have experience with this? Any info will be appreciated.

Some old postings about early 50s Massey-Harris conversions being relatively easy. Massey had seperate frame- engine was not a stressed member, just sat in frame. Tranny was on some a Chevy/GM truck transmission with a short shaft to rear end. Massey used the seperate frame and could use Continental 4 engine or a Chrysler 6 engine in same basic frame- models?? 44 and 101? Oliver another possible?- somewhat same frame pattern, engine not stressed member with front end attached to engine. Farmal F20 also possble but brakes and controls are not as modern- seperate frame from rear end to front wheels is the workable advantage. Is a winter project when snowed in and wife says get out of house until ground dries to get in field. Engine cam changed to LP cam or reground similar for low end torque, belt drive governor for about 1800 to 2200 RPM for practical HP 75? 283 engine? 327? RN.

I,ve seen alot of V-8's in tractors. Farmall F series,Farmall M, Allis WD,and Most common are the Ford N series. If you need something fast to work with and you don't want to spend money then I wouldn't try doing it. It takes alot of planning to do one. The Fords have a kit out on the market to help make it easier. You got to watch what you put them in and what you do with the tractor cause you got to rember that the tractors were not made to handle that kind of power and you could break something. Id sell the motor and save yourself a head ake.

Could be wrong, I often am... but I thought I heard that a small block chevy was almost a drop in with Allis WD.

For all the work it would take to convert a tractor, I would sell the engine and use that money toward a working tractor.

I agree. I'd save the engine for a Chevy car restoration and if I needed to fix up a tractror, I'd fix the engine already in it. I have seen a smallblock Chevy put into a David Brown 990. It would be OK as a novelty but as a working tractor, not a good match.
