Morning Allan; Hope your day goes better without chain breaks etc. Hay looked pretty good for conditions you have mentioned. Well I know I said it was too wet here. But-- its dried out now and blowing away. Question is; How well does your packer work on that dry soil? Did you need to add any weight? The one I picked up is good at breaking clods, pushes down small stones, but the soil still seems loose after two (checkerboard) passes? Appreciate your and anyone's advise. Bob advise.

Hi Bob,

Packer works like a dream; my favorite implement and no, it doesn't need any weight. Darned thing is a Goliath the way it is. :>)

Bob, do you mean that it has rained, the soil has dried out and now the wind is taking it away? If so, the packer is the very last thing I'd use in that circumstance; just makes matters worse.

I'd be for tearin' after it with a spring tooth to rough it up. Running at a diagonal to the prevailing winds. If it is really blowing bad and you are in a hurry to tie it down, "strip" the field alternating between worked ground and open ground the same width as your spring-tooh.

Hope I'm understanding you right?

Allan

Also,

If it is ground that is already planted to corn and is blowing, I'd use a rotary hoe and "skip" a pass in the same way to "strip" it. That will stop the dirt, then you can come back and catch the alternate pass later.

I know the feeling well. That wind is blowing and the dirt is trying to slice off your crop. Run the hoe in road gear or just as fast as you can go to "get ahead of the blow.

Goes without saying, start at the upwind side of the field.

I get nervous just thinking about blowing dirt! :>)
