317 john deere can't identify engine

recently purchased a 317 can't find any id. model on engine, pretty sure its a kohler probably 17 hp i did find a serial # hard to make out,maybe 93_050 .i need to buy parts for engine can someone give me a model # and what other # i need to get parts for a 17 hp kohler. that way i could look at diagram anyway. thank you very much randy.

Randy,
Should be a sticker tag under the coil on the shroud. Should read KT17 24301 if it"s a series ll engine if number is lower than 24301 that would make it a series l engine. Mike

Randy; You can get on the JD site. Parts on the net. They have all the models parts books on there and I use them to identify and locate things all the time. Really hleped getting a Kawasawki back togather.

They came with a KT-17 Kohler engine.

Series I = no provision for oil filter cast into the block.

Series II = at the right lower front of the engine, there will be a block-off plate covering a "boss" on the block, where an oil filter can be installed in applications where the engine is more exposed.

In addition to the jdparts.com site, Kohler has the owner's and repair manuals on-line, in .pdf format.
