Just thought I would get an opinion here, as it has been bugging me all weekend. I had an "internet" tractor buddy (we met in person numerous times) call me saying he wanted to sell a tractor and wondered what he should sell it for. I asked him about the tractor and he said it was in great shape but needed rear rims. We agreed on a price, and I decided to buy it from him. We met at a designated city (I travelled 200 miles, he 400) and I noticed right away that the fenders had cancer, the radiator sheetmetal had been pounded out and there was a big puddle of hydraulic fluid on the trailer. I made a few comments about these things and he said he was not aware of the leak, and since I had not asked him about the fenders or sheet metal he had not commented on them..... was I being a sucker for taking the tractor at the agreed price? I feel that I have been taken, but I hate confrontation and thought maybe he would adjust the price without me getting too upset. If I had gone to his place and looked at the tractor I would have walked away from the deal, but since he had hauled it that far I felt obligated to take it. Would you guys sacrifice a friendship over a tractor???

One mans junk... I have bought someone elses treasure before. Consider it a lesson learned albeit an expensive one. I have lost many thousands of dollars to a friend miss using propperty of mine. Both are hearts are still beating and no persons were hurt as a result. My propperty was totaly destroyed. We are still friends. Life is too short and the world is to small a place to carry a grudge.

I agree,

Iron is just iron, no matter the quality of the product. Good friends are really hard to find.

That's too bad. I think what's bugging you most is that a "friend" took advantage of you. That would bug me, too.

Lots of people have said what they would have done, but that doesn't do you any good now. About the best you can do now is take a lesson from it. In the future, if you're approached about a tractor you have not seen, if it is something that interests you ask the seller to email some photos.

Since everyone has said what they would have done, I guess I'll do the same. I think I would have paid him gas money for his trip but declined to buy the tractor and called it the cost of a misunderstanding. You assumed the fenders were in good shape. He assumed since you didn't ask about the sheetmetal, that it didn't matter to you. Pay his trip cost and call it no harm/no foul.

When I sell somthing, I tell the buyer everything I know about what I'm selling and if dealing by phone I give a detailed description. I beleave anyone who doesn't is ( in most cases ) trying to hide the bad and hose the buyer.

I guess everyone wants to be politically correct and not cause a scene. How can the seller look at the buyer... with all the leaks and rust and honestly say that the tractor is in good shape? Just because I didn't ask, its OK to have all these problems? No its not and the seller is being deceptive and dishonest. I would say to him- " I didn't know you needed the money this badly". Its not wrong for the buyer to be a bit upset and maybe you bought him and what is really like cheap. You are not the first guy this has happened to but you got to feel sorry for these guys who think they got away with something. As they say, its only money.

I would just pay up unless you really paid a premium price. Many do not view cosmetics on a tractor when they consider great shape. If it runs and operates well many would consider it great shape. I would negotiate on the leak as it was new to both of you but if you did not ask about the other things it is not up to the seller to come up with every detail. I suspect he answered about what you asked about cause he thought these things were important to you. And as you did NOT ask about the tin , he did not bring it up. Let the BUYER be aware.

I"ve noticed that a lot of guys don"t mention problems till after the sale then they sneak in,
"It might need a tune up,"I never noticed that tranny noise before",or the other day after i paid for a tractor the seller said he wanted to be honest with me and grabbed the radiator cap and the whole neck pulled out of the radiator.I figured if he was being that honest he should have told me before i paid. When money gets tight people stretch the truth or forget to mention problems hoping to pass it off on you and you won"t notice. You can"t even trust your friends
anymore.

Story like this reminds me why when it comes to tractors it's best to see what it is in person rather than by the description in an ad or over the phone.

Kind of like my 8N... ad said it didn't run but complete, so I call, get a description, sounds great. I can fix it I think. So I make an appt to go have a look see. When I get there after driving 100 miles, I find the seller left out one important part of the description. Tractor doesn't run AND it's in pieces. Atleast I was able to negotiate for a better deal. No friendship involved.
