55 gal. drum full of concrete, or Woods RM990 3-point finish mower? I'm trying to decide which will give me better ballast for loader work. My bet is on the mower...that thing's got some heft to it. Thank you for any opinions.

My bet would be on the barrel of cement. You won't believe how heavy that is. I have a john deere brush hog that has to be heavier than that woods finish mower and I know it don't even come close to a 55 gallon barrel of concrete. I think concrete weighs 4000 lbs a square yard. That is why the concrete truck sinks 6 inches in your yard in the dead of summer when you are pouring a slab of cement.

The mower weight will act like more that it actually weighs, since it hangs further out back... But it sure will be in the way when you need to back up.

Depending on the aggregate used in the concrete, a 55 gallon drum of concrete would weigh from about 875 to 1050 pounds.

Donno about the weight, but the drum will take up much less space behind, making the machine far more manuverable.

I would use the barrel as it sits closer to the tractor and is easier to manuver. The deck weighs more I believe around 900lbs verus 600 lbs for the barrel. Look on the woods web site

Hmm. Only way to know for sure is to weigh it. Check with your local grain elevator, some leave the scale turned on 24/7 and others will let you weigh something else if you ask 'em. Best to call ahead and ask how busy they are.
