Had about 11 grass fires last night in our county and neighboring county to north and a few more we may not have counted. Just dry lightning with no rain and more hot winds today. This is getting old fast. Went to 6 fires last night and lost no homes or barns luckily. It looked bad for a while but after 4 hours we went home but some in other county stayed out all night to watch a giant fence post pile burn down. Less than a inch or so all year so far. Last real rain over a inch was in August. Can count dryland wheat fields left to cut for seed on one hand in area and it's going to be expensive seed and not make much and others is just gone and plowed up already. More trucks to fix again today, such fun... Y'all send some rain this way when you can.

Glen,
Doesn"t sound like it"s changed to much down your way since the last time we talked? Must not be living right down there or something like that.
I dumped an inch out of my rain gauge this morning. Most of it was from Thursday"s night rain. Most of the farms in this area have got a lot of there corn in already. Some have beans in and coming up. I"ve seen corn the other day that was all most 6" high already. Corn looks yellow from to much rain and not enought sunlight and been to cold. Hay growing like a weed with all this rain, weeds too. I seen a farmer out rotary hoeing his feild Thursday afternoon. The rains here been coming in bucks full a times or in sheets at times. Packing the Grd. with a thick layer of crust. Wheat heading out already. I guess all and all we should be grateful we"ve been getting some rain here.
Going to be a few days before they can get out on the feild again from this last rain.
I"ve been mowing my lawn twice a week just to keep from wind rowing it. Like a wet spounge in places.
Glen if I could do it I"d send the rains we been getting down your way. And I"d send some to Allens place in NE only he has hay down right now and don"t think he"d appreciate that.
The weather sure has taken a change over the past couple of decades. Either get to much or nothing.
Take care and have a safe Memorial weekend. Mike

Hey Mike, Yeah it's either too dry or too wet most places. We could send you some warm dry weather but you might not like the hot wind like we had today with humidity of 3-8 percent. That hot wind is hurting as much or more as no decent rains. I don't expect what wheat is left to cut for seed to be good at all as a lots looks almost ready now but usually shouldn't be ready yet for another 3 weeks. Had stranger years though with most all the wheat already cut this time. Just not going to be any need for waves of custom harvesters this time though and that hurts business for our small towns too. No wheat harvest and no one has money to spend. At least no ones wheat here burned last night. Lightning makes it burn all to well. We were overwhelmed with help at fires last night and that doesn't happen enough at times. Even NM guys came over to help. Found out later another county to south had more fires than we had going at once with 16 and asked for our help but we had everthing here tied up and busy. I think they got more help from other direction though. Was glad one tire service place had service truck that could come out today. We got trucks fixed today and ready to roll again and would be nice if we didn't have to use them rest of year but that doesn't look to be soon. More rain forcast for mid week but need it real wet before lightning. Some in SE panhandle got bad hail tonight I think. You have good weekend too.

Send a little rain this way.
I've got customers begging for hay while complaining about the price. No rain, high fuel costs. My hay is too short to cut. I've got one guy calling daily trying to buy hay.
The good news is that I don't have to mow mt lawn.
Square bales are still $5 and up and round around $60 here. Might be worth truckin some in.

No lawn to mow here yet either. Had heard of hay being a lot higher than that here in panhandle. Glad we don't have cattle to feed right now. Those with irrigated hay got some put up recently but they have a lot in it and asking a good price for it I'm sure.

very dry here too in se texas. heard on the news last night about grass/brush fire in ft. bend cty that burned 400 acres. like you, we have had no really good rainfall since last fall. forecast is for rain on memorial day, but probably will only get hot wind and lighting and very little rain. so goes life in se texas in summer.

Yeah, I heard about the fires down by Fort Stockton and SW TX area. They had all the air tankers down there when Palo Duro canyon caught fire from lightning Monday and it's still burning even though they got more crews and some air tankers back. Everything done burned east of Amarillo and now we are afraid it alls going to burn on this side. Had 10 departments helping us last night and only burned 800 acres this time. 5 flats on trucks to fix today in the heat too. Just tired of hearing everyone whine about their rain so I'm going to vent about the dry.
