Had to work way late tonight and heard it on the truck radio news. Attorney General said that he didn't expect, nor had a reason to suspect that identity theft would occur, HOWEVER (he emphasized) if it does, he will see personally that whom ever does it will prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, because veterans deserve better. ??? ??? ??? Prosectute for identity theft? Now, there's a novel idea if I ever heard one. But, it begs the question from this veteran, is that an admission that they weren't or aren't prosecuting for indentity theft for anyone else? Did I miss something?

Whom would be allowed to take home a laptop with the personal records of 26 or 28 million in the first place? Kind've a lot like one of "the" three laptops with our nuke secrets that came up missing five or six years ago. How, and who?

He did not have any clearence to take it home, and is on administratve leave. He should be hung out to dry. From what I kept hearing through the night it began to sound like an inside job to me.

Good morning Jimmy. Those records come up missing the day before Vicente Fox comes to visit our country. Would it be out of line for me to suggest strip searching him and all of his staff before they head back south of the border? Hmm?

I wouldn't get too uptight. Shoot, we have all been passing our ss numbers around for years, employees, employers, banks, stores, business associates. And yeah, I guess somebody could steal my identity but they could steel yours or millions of others too and they don't need that many. I'll take my chances. Look at this way, the biggest crook of all (Uncle Sam) has all our numbers.

Yep...

I graduated in '92 from UConn and a regular part of the check-out process at the bookstore was to give your student ID (SSN) out loud for the clerk to key in so you'd get your co-op check at the end of the year.

It's absolutely ridiculous how many places use the SSN as an ID; and it's absolutely ridiculous how many organizations don't even exercise a modicum of common (computer) sense to take basic precautions to secure information like SSN, Financial Card information, etc.

This doesn't need an act of congress, just basic common sense that the easy way isn't always the right way.

Fort Lewis, Washington, summer 1969, basic training- to get all us grunts to learn our service number (which was our SS Number), we had to sing it out to the First Sergeant before getting into the mess hall. Over and over again, if we didn't get it right the first time. Wonder if they still do that?

Should add... in reply to Matt from CT, 05-22-2006 16:12:21
By basic common computer sense...

One, you have no, zero need for 24 million records. Maybe you grab a 1,000; 10,000...something big enough to representative. You shouldn't need the whole data set.

Two, you run sensitive information through some simple transformation -- make all the SSNs something like 111-11-1111; maybe increment each by 1 if you really need them to be unique.

Three, most if not all "homework" should just be how you write the formula to get the answer. You then take that formula (query, program -- whatever you want to call it) back to the office to run against the real data. Or you run it remotely which I've done plenty (prototype at home, then dial in to the office to actually run the report).

If you can't tell, it just really, really annoys me to hear of stupid losses of data like this.
