I have an Oliver 1655 with Roosa master pump. This spring it would start and run well, but after a while loose power till it couldnt even move itself. If you shut it off, waited a few minutes and started it again, it would run well for a while. A neighbor told me to take the ball and spring out of the check valve on the return line, as this was likely clogging with pieces of a plastic ring in the pump that was coming apart. I did this and it ran well for awhile, but yesterday mowing hay i had trouble again. It would occasionally rev up or down a few hundred rpm on its own, and it lost power once. I noticed when it lost power it was smoking a lot. I shut it down a few minutes, started it back up and it ran well the rest of the day. Is it time for an injector pump rebuild? Thanks for any help,
Josh

This is a example of the ease of gas moters. Thick fuel moters are great if you are farming full time, but for small and part timers like myself you cant beat a $30 carb kit, and they allways seem to be off the shelf at napa. Last inj pump I bought for a 756 had to send way out to the hinderlands of the west to get. Sorry for your problems, a good inj shop should fix you up ED

Have you drained/cleaned the fuel tank, cleaned the sediment bowel, and replaced the fuel filters? You may have clogged filters and/or some water in your fuel.

For all you guys who advocate breaking the ball out of the return line fitting,it has a purpose and that purpose is to keep a bit of housing pressure on the pump to aid in expelling air from the pump housing plus it helps stabilize the governor action.Yes, it is a short time fix,but if it were not important Roosa Master would not have spent the extra money on the check valve fitting.Think about it.Only delaying the inevitible pump overhaul can be quite expensive sometimes. If the rivets wear off like I have seen before the result is not pretty. They can lock up the governor weights and the operator will lose control of the engine speed.

YES!!!
Removing the ball and spring is only intented to be a temporary fix to get the immediate job finished.

At this point it could still be things outside the pump causeing your problems. If you don't see coffieground size chuncks comeing out of the pump don't do a rebuild.

Thats the thing I wondered about, he said I would find the valve clogged up with pieces of the plastic ring. I never found any peices at all.

I'm a small farmer and this is my first diesel tractor. Should I replace the injectors when the pump is rebuilt, or just rebuild the pump?

Well it would be wise to have the injectors tested for breaking pressure and spary pattern and then repair or replace as needed.
