Hey all. Since I see we're posting field pictures, I thought I'd ask a gardening question.

Got a bit of off-the-wall advice neighbor the other day. Said "Plant a cup of oatmeal with your tomato plants when you set them out."

Well, I did. A total of 42 plants. One row has a cup of oatmeal directly under the plant in the bottom of the hole. Another row has the oatmeal added in about 3 layers around the roots, with dirt in between. A third (and sometimes 4th) row are planted normally (no oatmeal) -- you gotta have a control group with any experiment!

Anybody else ever heard of this before, or tried it?

Thanks

Well I was curious, and googled it...LOL.We plant close to a hundred tomato plants and do alot of canning. What I found..it says to throw a handful of oatmeal,a pinch of human hair and an antacid tablet in each hole.Suposedly, the oatmeal and human hair is an old Indian trick..and the antacid is to keep the acidity down in the tomatoes????? ...folks claimed to have better tomatoes with the oatmeal then without..just what I read...yer milage may vary....

I don't know what nutrients the oatmeal would add,
maybe moisture retention/soil conditioning around the roots. Put three Tums in the dirt around and
you won't get blossom end rot. If you do this once you have the disease, it will cure it.

That would be the silliest thing I heard of, maybe the one who told you that, want's to see if Oats will come up with your Tomatoes... If you just put some good ole fashion Turkey manure in the hole, Yur in for a Big surprise to say the least....

This is the weekend when we transplant the tomatoes outside to the garden due to frost concerns.
