One of the simplests and easiest things to check first is your drain hose, where it goes into house drain pipe, it can be pushed on a inch or two and do exactly what yours is doing.

One thing comes to mind - the wig-wag. Maybe not the technical term for the component but what I've heard them called. Not kidding, these are a component inside the washer that "shifts" some of the cycles by electrical solenoids. Common to go out and cause problems such as yours.

If it's a componet failure and not a wayward pair of knickers. And the machine is more than 5 years old, toss it. I learned the $$$ hard way. The new massive front loaders are awsome. Just purchase the largest one you can find. Our Sears takes a sleeping bag, quilt or winter overalls with room to spare. The wahsers spin speed is so fast the dryer only has to run 1/2 to 2/3 the length of time it used to when drying a damper load.

I second that suggestion. When the washer finally went, we got rid of our 15 year old Maytag washer and drier stackable - bought the second-to-largest Kenmore front load washer and dryer. Great machines that save a signficant amount of water and energy.

It's the patriotic thing to do if you can afford the additional upfront costs.

alg, I have to agree with the sock in the inlet line to the pump idea. I have seen several instances of socks or other unmentionables having washed over the top of the inner drum, getting sucked into the line to the pump. I would just take the inlet line off the pump and look for an invading piece of clothing. Just be prepared to deal with the water that is currently in the tub.
Good luck, Tim in OR

Had the same problem with our old machine-was a Sears, I think-; turned out to be a sock blocking the pump intake (daughter had stuffed in clothes in a wad, sock slipped outside basket).

A dead scavenge pump? Can easily go dead if wash water has been running along shaft (although usual problem is a leak)? Could it be jammed? Is the filter clogged?
Electronics will prevent it spinning with a full water load to protect the main motor high speed/low torque windings.

How old is this machine. I had one like that where the contacts in the timer on the spin cycle were shot. It required a new timer.

Sounds like you might have a bad switch or contact somewhere. Maybe in the safety mechanism that stops the machine if the lid is raised? That will keep 'em from spinning and emptying the water. Check the link below. They might have something there that will help you.
