U have a friend that owns a store that gets in big long pallets and he give them to me. The main part of the pallet is a pair of 3X4 by 12 foot long, the cross bars are 3X4 by 3 or 4 foot long. Just ring to figure out what to do with them. I know I still have to replace my hay barn but not sure if they would work as cross beams to hold the tin on and be about to span 6 to 8 foot between the lower supports.
Thanks for any ideas of what you might do with them if you had them

I recently got a bunch of pallets from a new autoparts store that opened over in town.
I used them to build a storage room on my Dad"s garage. Looks great. Good and solid.

I been wishing I had some 4x8 pallets.
I need about 40 to 50 of them.
They are great for building with.
If I had them I could build a garage/shop to work in.

A guy near here built his house and barn completely out of pallets.
You wouldn"t know it to see it now.

And any of the pallets or pieces you can"t use,
you can burn them in the wood stove.

Wish I had a good source of pallets.

Similar to Dachsand I use them to build dog houses for me and some elderly folks I know. The good wood I try to save for BSA projects.

I use them to build sheds. I just built a 13x26 goat barn with them and di a 13x32 tractor shed in December. I have a total of $55 in both sheds COMBINED due to scrounging around and using things like pallets.

Dachshund, can you or Pooh Bear explain how you build sheds out of the pallets. I am interested in building a shed for some older machinery storage. Thanks.

The emerald ash borer and some pine beetle made it to North American forests from Asia in pallet wood. If you have good trees around you might want to know from where the wood comes before using it.

As for the borers and beetles, if the pallet was made in the USA, more than likely it has been ran through a low temp kiln to kill the bugs and larvae. There is a pallet mill a mile down the road from me and I asked what looked like a semi trailer was..... pallet cooker for borers and other bugs. They 'cook' all their pallets before shipping.

Sounds odd, but any pallets leaving here, going to Mexico , must be fumigated & certified, before they can cross the border. I guess pallets are a good way for insects to spread.

Weve never had any problems with anything to Mexico before, and Im here to tell ya we have sent some strange looking pallets built with wood striaght from the local Lowes. Now China on the other hand, pressure treated, fumigated, then heat treated oak only wood pallets is all they will take, unless its a plastic pallet, then they have to washed and sterilzed and certified sterile, loaded on a certified sterile container, and kept at a certain temperature until they get from the east coast to China via ship or plane. And to think, theysend crap in here thats covered with rat crap, smells like rat urine, and even has a few living in the crates!

If they are bolted together you are ahead of the game as far as taking them apart goes. I have taken apart a few pallets and on the 1x pieces
they are put together with air gun screw nails which usually break off. Not worth the time. However, thick lumber like that is worth some trouble, especially if it is hardwood. A woodworker near by would love them.

I used beam like that on the roof of a small shed, worked fine. If you have livestock stalls in the barn they would do for partions. If oak, they would go outside for a corral.

Suggestion: before taking them apart, check and see if they are straight. I got a similar pallet and it was made from lumber with a bow in it. Parked a tractor on it with the ends on 1x pieces to straighten it. If the lumber is straight, store it under cover until it dries, then it will be straight. Rule of thumb for drying green lumber is i year per inch, but if you are going to use it in a barn that wont be necessary. Have fun.

Most of them are oak or some other hard wood. They can be a bear to take apart but since I'm retired and there free its no big deal

Hung on posts they'd make a heck of a fence for a while.

Hey Rich, if you have a sawzall you can cut the nails off with Milwaukiee Bi-metel blade #48-00-5092, 10 TPI.

I have removed hundreds of boards from pallets using my sawzall, and these blades. They will even cut after they get dull.

Keith & Shawn

PS. better safe as many boards as you can, you might need to build yourself a "dog house"..:>)

Hi Old; If i had access to a bunch of those I might try to use them to stack hay (small bales)on to keep them off the ground. Keep thinking-LOL

I've used some of the long pallets with good tropical wood in my house as trim; I've also made wood toys out of some of the smaller oak and cherry you can find. I have a little joiner I use to plane them (you have to be very careful to get any and all metal out of course) the worst part of using this wood is that a lot of these pallets are assembled with spiral nails that are a real challenge to remove. I resorted to cutting them with a reciprocating saw, then drilling out the nail fragment; later using a dowel plug on the hole. You can find some great hardwoods in pallets! A black plastic solar "Kiln" will dry and kill any bugs. Like another post, I've heated my house with them for more than one broke winter month! Have fun...
