I have been looking for an inexpensive backhoe to use on the farm for small projects. Wife's grandpa told me yesterday he is selling his. He said it was a 3500 Ford 3cyl. gas. Motor overhauled in 2000, 200 hours on it since then, and two digging cylinders rebuilt then too. Rear tires are good, fronts are truck tires. He has had this machine approx 35 years. Said it was a 1963 model. Sheetmetal good, pins wore some, paint is old and faded. Machine has been inside last 20 years or so. We want to come to a price that is fair to both. What do you think of $5500?
Thanks for any opinion you can offer.

Hi MN,

You have totaly ruined the english language as you used the words "inexpensive backhoe" together.

The approiate words are "expensive backhoe" or "endless money pit"

There in the same catagory as a "ski boat" or "fishing boat". :<)

Good hoe. For that price, I'd be on it like stink on a skunk! Ford made a good machine. Like Ray said, that machine is newer than '63, Ford went to the "new" three cylinder engines and 35oo nomenclature in '65, so it is a '65 or newer. Get a serial number and someone on the hoe board or Ford board can probably get you a year.

3500 is a pretty good machine..Most had a short backhoe on them..3500 is slightly newer than '63. Back in '63 they were 4 cylinder engines..If memory permits , I think they were chain swing , at about $ 600.00 per half.....Last I priced them..Price is normal for vintage..
