These were mounted on the box of my 1953 Mercury 2-ton, but mounted so that they detach easily, almost as if they were supposed to be used off of the truck, not actually on it. One is empty, the other contains a liquid. I don't what kind of liquid (cap is rusted on) but I would guess kerosene. What are they? I was thinking they could be old road flares. Am I on the right track? How rare are they, or how much might they be worth? (just want to know how unique they are).

Thanks.

Lyndon

Thanks for the pointers! I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. For an added touch of originality, I may put them back on the truck after I finish restoring it. We'll see.

Even when I was in high school ('60s) I remember the highway department used similar to mark road work at night.

Bet worth a fortune to an enthusiest rebuilder. If you don"t want them, put the word out that you have them, then... sell them.

Had a friend that went to the Chevy garage on everything, including wiper blades. If it wasn"t AC Delco, didn"t go on anything of his... even the lousy parts. A fanatic.

lynden; back when i was a young trucker
we carried those in case we broke down
you set them along the road, took the cap
off, pulled the wick out and lit them so you would not get run into and usually
within a little while you would have several truckers stop and help you get back on the road, don"t hardly ever happen now. ken

You must be in Canada to have a Mercury name on a truck? In the states the mercury name was only on cars.

Yeah, I'm up in Central Alberta, near the Edmonton area. This truck was purchased new by my great-grandfather in southern Alberta. Haven't gotten it running yet, but soon.

Spector, I believe those are Kerosene flares to use in an emergency. Not sure but maybe someone else will chime in.

You are right on, They are old timer road flares. If you can get the small center cap off there is a wich(sp) under there, just light it like a lamp and put one in front and one at back of disabled vehical. They would stay lit till the first big truck went by and blew them out.
