Pricing tires this A.M.(16.9x38), and don't know tires well enough to know what's good. Choices are; goodyear, titan, firestone, continental, galaxy. Goodyear is the most$ and Galaxy the least. Availabilty is an issue, with more expensive ,harder to get. Some of the cheaper ones are 8 ply, and the expensive are 6 ply? What gives? Price spread is about $125.00 per tire. Any opinions welcome. Thanks, Kent

I have to dissagree with others, The old Firestones were good tires but when they went to the 23* field and road tires they were junk, sidewalls would not hold up (we had to put reliners in to try to get a bit more ware out of them, replaced with 75% tread left) and they did not have the traction of the 45* tire (working round for round with both) ( the 23* in a 12.4 is the same size as a 45* in a 11.2 tire) would not clean out with mud and when I was at the Firestone tire proving grounds I told the engineres there I would never own anouther Firestone tire because they are JUNK. I have gone with the Armstrong since (several sets on different tractors) and they are the best tire I have owned. And that 16.9 X 38 I think is way too large a tire for that tractor, A 4000 that is forrunner of the 4610 took a 13.6 X 38 and enything else was way too big. Now if it had the 30" wheels then a 16.9 would be correct

FYI, Armstrong has not made a tractor tire in 15 years. They sold there molds to Titan, who now owns Goodyear farm tires. The Firestone Field and Road is one of the best bias ply tracor tires in the world for straight pulling, but has a limited usefulness in mud or sidehill applications. 30 years in the tire business, and I have never heard of anyone complaining about a Firestone tractor rear. If they were not made for 15 years why could I buy new ones less than 8 year ago? The Firestones busted in the sidewalls on both sides of both tires between each of the tread bars in the first 2 years and the tires were not overloaded and correct size for tractor and not run flat and Firestone would do nothing about it

I can't tell you exactly when the Armstrong/Titan change-up happened, but I do know that a set of Titans came on my TS90, which was an early '98 build... so you're sitting on over 8 years right there. I haven't seen a branded Armstrong tire in a long time now. Can't say that I miss them either.

I put a set of AKURET brand rears on my M. I didn't like the thought of foriegn made tires on a classic USA tractor, but I saved about $100 per tire, compared to Firestone or Goodyear. The tires actually looked better, weighed more, and had a better warranty than the name brands. The same dealer had all three brands in stock, plus a few more. I don't work the tractor very often, but it has pulled a plow at a couple of plow days, and I have even hooked it to sled at the local tractor pull and the tires have performed flawlessly.

Hi Kent,

I've had a few sets of Galaxy/Primex tires. They're cheap, and they tend to wear rather quickly on hard surfaces.... but they are a good tire. Good casings, and probably the best value cheap tire out there. Firestones have always been good to me, give little trouble, and wear pretty good. GoodYears have good casings, and poor lugs. They wear bad, pull poorly, and shake your tractor to pieces on hard surfaces. Long bar/ short bar tires are a devil for that. Titan power grips will pull really well for a long bar/short bar tire, but as far as I'm concerned, they are just one rotten cheap tire. I've had blowouts with them, and with the old Armstrongs (Titan used to be Armstrong), and the casings are just plain poor on both. I will never buy a set. General is another that I would steer clear of. If you were looking for a value brand radial, then I would look at BFG. They are made by Michelin, look like an AgriBib, but are somewhat cheaper. If you're going to wear the tire out before it rots out, look at the radial because you get a lot more lug, and a lot more life, so in the end, the extra cost turns into a saving. I don't know anything about the Continental tire you mentioned, other than I had a few small impliment tires from them that were probably on par with the other makes in that size. That's not saying much, as I can't get one that lasts more than a few years.... Anyhow, good luck on the purchase.

Rod

Depends on the tractor but if your trying to keep a older tractor original check to see what was used on the tractor new.

If its just to use I like the firestone.
Goodyears would be my second choice.

If 8 plys are the same price go with them. They may last longer.

Just my opinion Gary

Depends what you are going to do with the tractor? Is it a show tractor or is it a worker? I my self like the firestone field & road. I put them on my workers because the have excellent traction and wear like iron. They also are about mid-range on price here, in eastern Iowa. Just my .02

Some customers want "price" some want "quality" and companies try to please both.

Never had much luck with Goodyear ANYTHING! Had good luck with Continental truck tires, but not had any tractor tires. I have a set of Titans on one of my tractors (4 years old) and like them a lot. Another tractor has Goodyears on it and they need to go! Looks like I'll be in the market for a set soon.
