It"s just time for a good frost, because my plum trees are in full bloom (young trees and never got any plums yet). Yesterday it cleared off, so I knew the frost was on it"s way last night. I set up a sprinkler to start at midnight and run till 6 AM. Sure enough this morning there was ice on the fence, so I went out and turned the water on manually and will run it until about 9 or 10.

I"ve ran water on the garden and that stuff for frost protection, but never fruit trees. Does anyone know if this will work or not?

Dan

Hey you guys, you need a couple of smudge pots. they use to use them all the time here in eastern OR. I still see them in use in Tri-Cities,WA area in apple and cherry orchards.

We used them in the chicken house, when I was a kid, we raised 5000+ chickens every year.

Our plum tree almost always blooms before last frost. Several years I've saved it with the sprinkler, but if it's too cold or too many freezing nights it's too much.
The icicles are quite a sight.
Good luck, Wm

It seems to have worked last night.

I live in southern Oregon east of Klamath Falls.

Thats what I'm doing right now in the blueberries. If it gets to the freeze number, I turn on the water.

I dont know where in oregon you are that it frosted lastnight, but here in hillsboro it did'nt quite make it.

One thing to consider is to not use too small a nozzle in your sprinklers and to not use too high of pressure. The finer the mist, the easier it is to freeze in the air. I use a fairly big nozzle and lower pressure to keep the droplet size big enough not to freeze. The warmth of the water going around in the air will help a bunch.
