Could it be the solenoid?

I went home today and started examining my tractor (the MF 135) before starting on my JD L130's mowing deck.

I checked the carbureator fuel line filter and there was a little bit of gunk in there and gas was coming out of the fuel line too.

I started checking the wiring to see if there were any loose connections, and I didn't find any, but I tried to start it up again and, it didn't even act like it had juice.

I wonder if its not the solenoid causing me all the fuss? The solenoid is new I bought it last year and it was installed when the starter was rebuilt/remanufactured last June.

Just throwing that out there. When I get one of those devices that tests if there is a current in a particular wire, how should I use it in this application? (Dumb Question)

I shouldn't even post this under my name...

Did you by chance take the battery out for winter?

I recently did this and after I put it back in I could get the darn thing to crank at all. I tested this and that. It turns out I forgot to hook up the small positive wire that goes through the ignition switch and to the solenoid. Kind of funny how it won't run without that wire.

If you dont have a service manual, try the JD web site and look for the parts manual. It may have several nuetral saftey. seat, clutch/brake, maybe more. I use those pics to trouble shoot my garden tractor. Bob

Have you checked the neutral safety switch? Current runs through it from the switch to the solenoid assuming it hasn't been bypassed.

You know, that was another idea I had considered, but in all honesty I wasn't sure about it being the culprit. Should go and buy a new safety switch and see if it works?

You can test to see if the neutral safety switch is the culprit. Connect the two wires going into the switch and then attempt to start the tractor. Make certain you have it in neutral, and that you"re sitting on the tractor. If it cranks, the safety switch is probably bad and should be replaced. Do NOT bypass it permanently; do it only as a test. If the starter is still not engaging and spinning the engine, the safety switch is probably OK and there is another problem elsewhere.
