Hi Guys,

The fellas over on the Farmall board suggested I install this electronic ignition and it would stop the "putzin around plug foulin".

Okay, used it in the field for three days and it never missed a beat and is running like a new one right now, but I know if I just use it just for light duty, it is gonna start fussin' and missin.

Swapped out the points, which took all of maybe 5 minutes, pulled the plugs and gapped 'em to around .040 to .045"". Now we'll wait and see, I guess. :>)

Allan,
You have a phone number or a web site for the vendor? I would like to buy 2. One for an IH 350U and one for a JD 50.

I just got mine from the Red Shop here. Don't really know where he ordered it from.

Ok, thanks Allan...gotta go there anyway soon. Gotta try and find some spark plugs for the 450D.
They are strange looking things.

Allan, my tractors run two ways, wide open or putzin around most of the time and I wouldn"t give up the electronic ignitions for anything. Burns better, cleaner, and made a little more HP on the dyno. I"m not sure if it helped with amount of gas used or not. I think you"ll like the change. Just so nobody goes crazy on me, the HP only went up a couple HP and I only checked this on my two tractors.

They make them for 6 volt or 12 volt for most applications.

This particular part number just fits IH distributors. A bolt in with no adjustment 'er anything.

Pretty sure they make 'em for all tractors tho.

GL,

Right now, it runs just like it always has. Darned thing just ticks 'em off. But, just working around the yard and it goes to carbon fouling the plugs in just a day or two.

Take 'er out and make it work and it clears right back up. The big boys tell me this is a trait of the red gassers because of the way they fuel on the high side (dunno, never owned one before).

I think the darned kit ran something like $80 to $100. Red Shop guy wasn't in and his boy just threw me the box and said to stop in another day to settle up.

Allan,

I don't know about it being a trait of IH gassers fouling plugs. My 706/263 was bought new by my dad and uncle and in nearly 7000 hours it has never had trouble fouling plugs in heavy or light work. It has had nearlly every other problem but not plugs. Even when it was burning about as much oil as gas before its secound to last overhaul the plugs never fouled. Since yours if fouling two plugs side by side I'am wondering about intake leaks or possaiblly a head gasket? A compression test and a can of brakekleen are in order I think.

Hi Scott,

Yeah, it's probably a band aid stop gap, but thought I'd give it a try.

Compression was 127 across the board when I bought it (was the last time I checked it). I can idle the thing down to around 450 rpm, so don't think it has an air leak issue.

Buying used is a throw of the dice anyway. Probably be my luck that it has wobbly valve guides or something.

Dunno, we'll see. :>)

My 666 gasser doesn't seem to have any problem with fouling plugs. I changed, plugs, wires, cap and rotor when I first bought it, and it's been just fine since. I've had it 3 years and just use it as a loader tractor, heaviest field work yet was a 10 tandem disc. I'll be interested to see how your fuel consumption changes.

I like the sound of the gasser too, and I know it's gonna start no matter how cold the weather. They sure are thirsty though!

Another nice thing about 'em is that ya don't have to wear the Mickey Mouse ears to hear yourself think.

But yeah, talk about thirsty! :>(

Strick,

Does your carb have a high-side adjustment screw?

This thing of mine sure gets plenty of fuel at anything other than an idle.

'Cause if he got a diesel he wouldn't be able to tinker with fancy new ignition parts on his tractor. Simple as that! : )

I've run about every color ever made in the last 40 years. Been on everything from old Farmall Ms to skidsteers to articulated loaders. I've driven the JD powershifts and the guy I was working for bought me two new ones when the 15 speed came out in 1984. No Allan, for all around handy loader work I'll keep my Hydro.
