Best 1960's / 1970's loader tractor

Gather 'round everybody, time for another discussion about "Best tractor for such and such a job..." Which 1960's or 1970's tractor makes the best loader tractor? It would have to be about 80 or 90 horsepower, and be able to handle a loader that will lift 1500 pound bales regularly. You're probably wondering what's the reason for asking. No reason. It's probably going to be several more years before our Ford 6600 gives up the chase, but I'm just curious about what might be a good tractor to look at after that.

The Allis Chalmers D-19 is a pretty good tractor. The only problem is that they suck a lot of gas. I am not sure if the diesel version does or not. If you dont mind that they are perfect for what you want.

I use an Oliver 1655D handle bale up to #2000 bales. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is the best loader tractor but works very well. The best I ever used was a 2005 AGCO RT100 w/fwa. AMAZING!!

Have to agree. Go a little newer and get 4wd. I bought a JD 2755 4wd with a 245 loader for $17000 a few years back, most I ever paid for a tractor, and have no regrets. Can't beat 4wd on a loader, even my 4020 was nearly helpless on a little snow or mud handling balage bales. Use it every day on my dairy farm.

A little more modern than you were probably thinking, but what about an allis 7010 or 7020 with powershift? Those powershifts were nearly bulletproof. They also have the heaviest 2wd front end I have yet to see on a 110-130 hp tractor. My 7000 has the Allis HD front end (standard front end on the 7010 and up) and let me tell you, that thing is better than the standard 7000 front end (the same as the 200 pretty much) and 4 or 6 suitcase weights, its a behemith. Also, these tractors can be had for quite a bit less than the red, blue or green counterparts. Good luck

kyhayman swears by Ford 7700's. From what he says, I don't think he would use anything else. I don't see him posting all that often anymore. His name came to mind because he's in the haying business. On the other hand, I saw a John Deere 6403 listed for $25550 on JD Machine Finder. It only had a few hours on it. No loader. It went pretty fast at that price. 2WD.

A JD 4020 gas syncro range with a 158 loader and a 115 rear blade is a combo that would be hard to beat for all around use.

I have had several tractor Loader combinations, the best loader by far was the DU AL 3100, The best tractor was a toss up between the 1850 Oliver and the 4230 Gas

Spector, I will catch all holy hades on this one. I really like the IH Reds. But here, I have to say the best loaader tractor I have ever been is a Deere.
First... 90+ horeses, a HD frontend. Powershift trans.
A 4520/4620 or 4230 Open top will fill the specs here very nicely. All tractors will have dual hydrolic remotes for the loader, A 3 can be added for about $800 to 1200 depending on parts used and availability of used and new parts.
A 4230 with a straight 8 speed is a close second IMO! A good 4230 opentop should be gotten for + - 10 to 12K depending on condition. A loader for about $3500 . So for a rough figure to go by $15k should put you in a very nice loader traactor, that will do this job quite nicely and have hp to spare for other chores like plowing or shredding with a 15ft batwing shredder. Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

You want an IH Hydro.
I like the 86 but if you realy want a heavier tractor get a 100.

I have a 1066 IH. It's a real work horse but not for loader work. Shift controlls are to sloppy. Its good to feed with but slow when loading or unloading with a trailer. Just my thoughts.

I wouldn't have a loader without MFWD, but if I had to go 2-wheel of the vintage you are talking about, I'd look at the White 2-85, this is a lot fo tractor for the money. Other good choices: IH 706/756/806/856/766/866/any of the Hydroes(you might luck out and find one of these IH's with an Elwood MFWD), Deere 4020, late 3020, Ollie 1850, 1750, Ford 7710. IF you want to go later into the 1970's, the Deere 4030, 4230, a whole slew of Ih '66's. There are some other good ones but these come first to mind.

If just about all you do is loader work, you should seriously look into a large skid-steer.

Well, loader work would make up the bulk of it, but there would be some trailer pulling and light tillage too. We run about 180 acres, mostly pasture, so all we need is a heavy utility, so to speak. Our Ford 6600 works great, except it's almost a little on the light side. I'm also pretty fond of the "classics" so to speak, the tractors built in the 60's and 70's. They'd work for what we're doing, and wouldn't be as expensive as a newer machine. If luck comes my way, we may also pick up a little bit of hayland to play with, so a PTO may be necessary. Mostly just curious, is all.

If it was that easy in reply to Specter, 05-03-2006 13:40:11
There is never an easy answer - it depends on what u are loading - I know this for a fact - we used a 3020 JD - with syncro - great shifting between forward and reverse, great power steering, differential lock, and with a narrow front you could spin in basically a perfect circle when clearing slop off concrete floors in pig lots...
