Is that a 10' model? Ours is a nice 12' model, I think it's a FB. It's got galvanized boxes, and it's older than the hills but it puts in a good stand every year.

Looking good- is that a spike drag behind the drill? I am with you on the tractor time, but some of the beating (wallet too)I take keeping up the old equipment makes me think sometimes.

Hi Ya Bob,

Yeah, I've been playing around with ideas that I read about from you guys here.

Last fall I planted some alfalfa naked and used a roller behind the drill. That didn't work, not even a little bit.

So, this time around, I scrounged here and there and found a couple of old John Deere harrow sections. Think this is gonna work a whole bunch better in this type of soil.

Hope it comes up anyways. :>)

For a long time (like years...) I would pull a Brillion sprocket packer behind my 5100 drill, and just have the alfalfa drop onto the ground from the low rear mount grass box, relying upon the roller to make soil contact. Worked really well here ...QR..

That's what I did on that patch last fall. Just plain didn't work and I think I'm gonna have to plow 'er up. Very poor stand.

How do you keep your back side from sticking to the seat ? I find that it is most uncomfortable. 8-)

Drill looks about like what we used last week to plant oats/orchard grass/alfalfa in Iowa. Small field, used IHC 350d to pull drill and finish plowing corn stalks first. Brother will have hay field to feed horse next yeat. Little 350 sounded happy, didn't use as much fuel as your gasser. Drill did good job except for a couple clogged tubes for fine seed hopper-alfalfa. Rains were were due next night after finished , got a sprinkle. Sister was using big green (JD 8nnn something) thing on main fields to get corn in last wednesday- said rain should hold off until friday and she would be happy. Brother will have to stick with Cub Cadet until broken arm gets better. RN

Allan, I was just reading your post and wondering if you aren't missing the boat. Put up some cottages and sell the ranch experience including: tractor seat time, horse husbandry, bonfires, barbeques, square dancing, guitar pickin, rifle range, and post hole digging so all of of us readers could come out and buy the experience on your property. Make the accomodations fine enough to bring the women along so they can ride the horses and don't forget the swimmming pool. You could get all the plowing done by eager farmer wannabes who want to "Experience the Farm in the wide open spaces of Nebraska". In no time at all you would be havin to put up a traffic light to control the mob. Can I send in my deposit today?

By the way that dirt looks like it is awful hard seeing as how the tires don't even begin to sink in. In Michigan a truck like that would be stuck.

Big smile, Vern

What stops that land from blowing away when you get it worked up like that in wide open country? I bet it's not lack of wind, so it must be soil texture.

Hi Kruss,

It doesn't blow if it has been worked.

Where a guy runs into trouble is after it rains and then dries out real fast (the sand effect). That's when it packs up and heads for Kansas City.

At that point, a feller has to get right on it to tie it down with a spring tooth or some such thing and we try to work the ground at an opposing angle to the prevailing winds.

Good news/bad news is that we just don't get a lot of hard beating rains out here. Fact is, we don't get much rain at all. :>(

That ground sure looks like it worked up good. Was that the old hay field ? That view over the grain drill looks like a toy in a sand box. Wish I had a view like that ! No one to bother you for a few miles anyhow.

Yep, Allan. I think many of us live vicariously through your activities and your photos. I only wish I had the property and equipment to do those types of things. Maybe someday I'll have more. Until then, I'll just track what you're doing! Tim

People wonder why I use this old, tiny equipment.

Heck, it's going way to fast the way it is. Wish I had another 50 acres to do. :>)

Ahh, that makes me yearn for getting out on the land. Too bad I don't have any tillage to be done, and the neighbors don't need any help. :-(

Ultimately, having fun is what really counts. :-)

Thanks for the pics Allan, they sure made my day! :-)
