I"ve been told that with tractors in the 30 to 40 HP size if you can pull a (pull type ) 2 bottom plow at say 3 miles per hour....you can pull a 3 bottom (mounted)plow at the same speed. Question..does a mounted plow have that much advantage? What are your experiences?
Thanks

I have a set of 4x16 bottom trailer plows. On occasion I've barrowed my neighor 5x16 semi mounted plows. I can't plow any fatser then 4.5 to 5 mph with either and they both do just as good a job plowing.

Russ, on a mounted(intergal) plow one can take advantage of the tractors load sensing devices and you do get the advantage of plow weight exerting preessure on rear tires. I was always told the further from your tractor a load was the harder it was to pull. Tx Jim

If you don"t have load sensing on your 3pt hitch, and most older tractors, and add-ons don"t, you"ll have a lot of trouble establishing a even plow depth. Every time the front of the tractor goes up and down, the plow does the opposite. If you have pancake flat fields, it"ll work just fine. I"m not that lucky. Trailer type plow does a far nicer job on these conditions.

In my experiance, all things being equal(moldboard shape, shares, colters, depth..) the amount of HP required to pull each is the same. The advantage of the mounted plow is the added weight transfered to the tractor for more and better traction.

If plow hitch an tractor drawbar are correctly adjusted you will also get weight transfered to wheels of tractor with pull plow. Difference is pull plow will plow those hard spots while mounted will raise an skim over hard spots making you believe it pulls easier
