Anybody do much mowing/bushogging with a tractor without live PTO power? Moving to a bigger tractor and it does not have live power. Can it be converted? Can P/S be added?

Also, the tractor is an RUS 1010 "Special" What does the special mean? The guy I bought it from is a large collector and he indicated that some of the 1010's were problem machines. He wasn't too worried about this one though. Any thoughts?

The 1010 is basically a two-cylinder generation 420/430-chassised Deere with a four cylinder sleeve-and-deck engine. When Deere developed the NewGen, they lavished their engineering attention on the bigger tractors (3010/4010 series), and the smaller tractors slurped hind mammary, so to speak. Deere didn't get around to revising the 1010/1020 until 1965. That said, the 1010 isn't a bad little tractor especially in the gas mode. The Diesels were prone to sleeve leakage (seal failure under the increased vibration and stresses of Diesel operation) and thus a shorter service life, but the gassers were better in that regard. If you don't have live power, put an over-running clutch on the PTO so the brushog doesn't try to propel the tractor when you push in the clutch. Over-running clutches are easy to find at a tractor supply shop or any dealer worth their salt. just my $0.02. wish you luck.

When I stopped climing that tree in my 1010 (bushogging) I got an override clutch & installed it on the PTO shaft. Now when I put in the clutch the dang thing STOPS. It does make life less intresting.

Third Party Image

This 1010 Special is on the Deere lot at Devils Lake, North Dakota. It's pretty rare to see one up here on the prairie!

A 1010 special is a stripped down version of a
1010 to make it cheaper to purchase. It didn't have PS or live pto, some had a pan seat like an 8n ford.
