I have a friend who I used to work with that is now on disability for a very bad back. He would like to drive a tractor to mow some fields around his house.

Does anyone know of a special seat or other piece of equipment that would let him drive a tractor without killing his back? thanks.

I hate to be a stick in the mud,but if he has a bad back, and is on disablity,I would be very wary about letting him do that.If by chance an investigator sees him doing that,bye-bye disabilty! I know a guy who was in a very similar situation.

I'd ask the doctors first. I can't imagine being jostled around for a prolonged period of time on a tractor can feel good or be helpful to an already known bad back. I know there are times when I climb down from one and the back smarts pretty good, and my back isn't even bad as far as I know. Maybe check with seat manufacturers, even truck seat manufacturers. I've gotta think that truck drivers have to have some of the worst backs, but seat suspension and ergonomically designed seats have come a long ways, just a little late for some of them.

Something else you mentioned, is on disability. Perception counts for a lot. Right, wrong, or indifferent, someone might see him doing something that they think violates a disability, and no one (government, insurance companies, businesses) wants to pay for disabilities, especially if they can avoid or get out of it. Whatever physical activeties your friend takes part in, really should have doctors approval so it doesn't come back to haunt him by misperception from someone looking not to pay, and then charge back. Just a thought.

I get along the best with the IH verticle acting seats like they used on the 56 66 86 series. I support myself on my elbow a lot and it is the only seat I have ever been able to ride all day. No way in H*** can I ride a JD 3020 4020 seat, they just beat me to death.

My sister fell down the stairs of her hay loft carrying a bale of hay a few months ago. Broke two ribs. I've been driving down to her place every week to push up the manure pile for her. The back and forth is still too much. She's started back to mowing; she doesn't do it for long at a time, though. The seat on her late model Deere is a lot more user friendly than the pan on my H.
As Old said, maybe taking it easy, limiting time spent will be enough. Also, if you "tractor seats, disability" on a Google search there is a lot of expert stuff. Good luck,
Wm
PS I hate to bring this up, but if he's receiving disabilty income he may want to get more than technical advice before engaging in what some may take to be strenuous work. I know that just because somebody has gone to a lot of trouble and figured out how to do a little bit of useful work that doesn't mean they're fit for the factory floor, but you can't give the management weasels an excuse.

I know where hes at, my doctor forced me to retire, I was driveing truck and when he found out he said your retired. As far a a seat I don't think there is one that will really help. If he has a brace for his back tell him to wear it and also limit his time on the tractor. I still do my own hay and even drove a dozer today. What usto take me a day to do now takes me a week or more. Like when I mow hay I mow for an hour or so and then walk away. Tell him to do as much as he feels he can do and then stop theres always tomorrow and if he chips away at it, it still gets done just takes longer

After two rods, four clamps, four screws and two cages.(L-5)The best ride I found was the steel pan on my Super C,I couldn`t ride a lawn mower but I could drive the C. Three years later and I deliver welding gas and tow moter L.P. 50hr a week.

Thanks for all your replies. I had not thought about the disability police checking up on him, that could be a definite problem.

I feel bad for him, he is in his early 40"s and there is not much physical activity he can do.
Thanks again.
