Need advice: one tractor or two?

I've got 13 acres to take care of. I need to mow about two acres. I also want to plant about an acre of pumpkins. Eventually I'd like to use the rest to start a small wildflower and native grass operation. Here's the dilemma, should I get a "garden" tractor (like Cub Cadet GT2550) to mow and garden and hire out the bush-hogging/discing. Or should I get a cheaper lawn tractor for mowing only and also get an older tractor (like an 8N) to do the heavier work? My fear is that I'll overwork a garden tractor and waste my $$$$.

Good 12-15 year old light utility like a Ford 1520 or 1720 with a loader and ROPS etc will be your right hand. Good older Farmall or similar but new enough to have independant PTO and live hydraulics will be your muscle tractor. Two tractors will do it. You don't need a LOT of muscle because you don't have a lot to do. I would leave the N Fords out of it, speaking from experience.

Larry, I think you misread his original post. The question was, one tractor or two? Not, should I get a tractor, or will a push mower and a #2 shovel be enough to get by with? Which is what he will end up with if he asks his wife. Allan actually got it right- you need 4 tractors, period. Nobody really knows why, you just do.

Pete, Here is my two cents - get a MF 135 Diesel or Gas Deluxe. You'll get Live PTO, a fuel mizing engine, plenty of power and response, and the ability to make your repairs cheaply, that is you can get replacement parts from aftermarket sources and Massey-Ferguson itself.

If you want a loader tractor, try the MF 150 its a little bit heaver built, but the same HP as a 135.

All around, Masseys were known for their low fuel consumption and given the way prices are its a great feeling to know, one hour of work eats up less than a gallon of gas.

Out of curiousity, what part of Ohio are you in? I go to School in Dayton but I'm from Pataskala...

You can have the best of both worlds with the many many different compact tractors out there today new and used.

My concern is not having enough weight with the compact tractors to do the heavy work. You could have a 40hp Small but non compact tractor that could do better then a compact.

I'd recommend maybe even a Ford 3000 or 4000. More so for the fact I have one for sale :). But they're a good size tractor, useful, can even put a loader on them, and they'd be fine for a finishing mower. Just my thoughts. Paul

A tractor like a JD 750 4x4 will do alot more than any 8N.

just get you a small tractor like the 8n for all your disking and brush hogging needs and take the money you'de spend on the lawn mower and buy a 5 foot 3 point finish mower for the back of the tractor. will make quick work of the yard mowing and is easy to take care of.

Where are you at in Ohio? I live SW of Columbus near Mt Sterling.

I have twelve+ acres and found I have use for both a larger tractor (Ford 2N) and also a smaller garden tractor.

I use the Ford to mow about 6 acres regularly and also to plow, disc, plant, etc several food plots and a large garden area.

You definitely dont want to try and mow 13 acres with a garden tractor it will take you a week!

Up near my house the Ford is just to big to do that mowing (gotta steer around the bushes etc) and the garden tractor just does a much nicer job.

I also use the garden tractor to pull a little sprayer and also a little wagon when I am moing topsoil, mulch etc.

They both have their uses so I would vote for getting both.

Get the 8N and use it for everything except the mowing close tothe house - then get a riding lawnmower for that! I have 101 acres and mow about 4 acres with the 8n and a "hog". I use the sickle mower on about 12 more, then rake. I also disc, cultivate, PHD, plow, plant, and just about everything else with the 8N. I have larger machines that I use for loader work and baler work, but the 8N is the work horse!
