Just a note in reply to Lance in Brenham, TX, 04-22-2006 19:36:58
pretty sure they made threshers befor tractors-.
I've seen pictures of them run by horse-power drive. Not much to some, just a box/bed thing with a spinning wheel with teeth. Bet some one has a picture.

Adding a bit to what greenmech said, for thousands of years grain was cut by hand, tied into sheaves to make handling easier and minimize the loss of grain, brought to a threshing room, and flailed with sticks to separate the grain from the straw. Obviously a very labor-intensive process.

The reaper was developed to cut the grain using horses. The binder was then developed to automatically tie the grain into sheaves as it was being cut. Then the thresher was developed to thresh the sheaves. Each step was easier than before, but it still involved a lot of labor.

Finally the combine was developed; it "combines" reaping and threshing, avoiding the task of binding and transporting the sheaves.

A thresher, threshes grain. Bundles of grain are fed into this machine and it removes the grain from the straw.Powered by a belt from a tractor. It was the fore runner of the combine.Hope this helps. Ron Mn.

Thanks! I was at a festival today and there was an old Case tractor and it said thresher under the Case name. Why does it say this on the tractor?

The original Case company was the J I Case Threshing Machine Co as their main business was building threshers. Did you know that IH (the International Harvester Company) started out building harvesters McCormicks reaper was in those days called a harvester and as the company wanted to export machines world-wide thus the name International Harvester.
