I am looking for some expert advice. The front differential went out during our last big snow storm (had it in 4 wheel). Took it to the shop and he said that their is no differential fluid, bone dry and turned to powder.

8k miles ago I went to one of those fast (40pt check) oil change places and they noted on my bill that they checked it and it was ok. I did the last oil change.

Differential fluid is sticky, stinky and would leave a mess on my floor if the seals leaked.

My contention is that they never checked it. Can I prove it....that is where you experts come in. I have pictures of the old differential and would think there would be shinny spots on there where the fluid leaked out. I can send them to some of you mechanics/experts.

Is it possible that it came from the factory with minimal amounts and would it go 90K miles? I hear that in this vehicle the shaft is always turning.

Do I just suck it up and pay the $1,500 dollar repair? Thanks

I had an answer in reply to Rusty Scupper, 04-21-2006 08:46:41
It took me a couple of days but I did come up with an answer - you should have put it all together - no oil - took it back for another 40 point check/service and then you would have had proof....

too late now i suppose - unless u drain all the oil out - run it through a service call and then tell them..... .

Hmmm, not sure how you would tell. Picked it up tonight and $1,826 later I have a used front differential assembly, remanufactured left axle and a box of parts. Mechanic says that there is no way from the point they checked and didn"t indicate any leaks and 8k miles later it would be bone dry. He says that they drained it and didn"t fill it or they didn"t check it. Just a little ticked off that I paid 35 bucks for an "oil change" for the "added service" and it ends up costing me $1,826 dollars more. Coincidence????
