Just have to vent...Needed a fuel pump for my 1981 F350 Chassie (Flat bed). I goto Auto-Zone to purchase part that I need. Go thur typical BS after I tell them I need pump for 81 F350 351 M, then the stupid questions, Automatic? 4x4? on and on. Finually they have parts number up on computer screen,,,Guess what it is showing, electric in tank, I tell guy it is wrong, it is mechanical. Man I don't believe it, he has the dumb look, like what are you saying!! After 10 minutes of this going back and forth with this idiot, I tell him just give me a fuel pump for a 77 F250 Ford 351M,,,WOW thier computer still showing an electric pump in tank...I'll tell you what who ever programs their system needs to be sent down the road kicking empty beer cans, talking to themselves.

Guess I will be heading to NAPA tomorrow morning to talk to partsman or woman that knows what a fuel pump is !!!! Gees I can't believe how STUPID these parts people are today...where did they come from?? I almost ask this guy if his mom had any kids that lived, but thought better of it...OH well

Well feel a lot better now that got that off my chest.

How many idiots do you have working in your parts stores??

I don't think just because you have a bad experience with one person at one store makes it right for you to blame every single person and the whole chain of stores, even if it is Auto Zone. I, myself, work at an Advance Auto in North Carolina. I am only 18 years old at the time. I took 2 years of automotive technology in high school and now I am working on my Automotvie Technology degree at a local community college. I do tractor pulling and have grown up around antique vehicles. I may not know as much about cars as everyone else but I do believe I mgiht know more than the average 18 year old, but to you that wouldn't matter. If you walked into a parts store and saw me behind the counter, you would probably just think "stupid young punk." Where am I supposed to get a start at?? Where am I supposed to get experience at?? I am not saying that in your case that you were wrong but it is people like you that make working at parts stores, suck. You have no respect for the people that are there to help you. I wish you could work there for a week and see how it is dealing with the public, oh wait, you probably know everything anyway. I don't make minimum wageand its not my first job, its been my favorite job so far, good manager, awesome people working with me. The only thing I don't like about it is when I have to deal with people like you. I'll tell you a story, I had a guy call and ask for a fuel pump for a 80's Buick Century with a V6, well I told him the only thing it was offering me was a electric pump because this engine was Fuel Injected. Well he swore up and down that its carbureted and I even read back to him, "198? Buick Century with a ?? V6?? He said yes. Well he finally ended up sayin "Well you need to change your damn computer." Well after that comment I let him talk to someone else. Guess what, he was telling me the wrong car the whole time, it was a Buick LeSabre. HA and the whole time I was wrong, and in his eyes, still am wrong. Because the customer is always right. My point is, 40% of the time people don't know what they are looking for, another 40% of the time they think they know what they are lookin for but don't know what its called, and only about 20% of the people are nice enough to deal with and aren't @$$holes about everything. I hope you never have another good experience at a parts store, just because of the way you acted after that 1 bad experience.

Webb, where did you read in my post that mentioned anything about the age of the individual or indivividuals I was dealing with??? I will clarify this for you, I was dealing with a person in mid 50's,"Manager" which I did not mention in original post. Age has nothing to do with being inept. One of the main problems is, that inexperienced parts people don't and won't listen to the customer, who owns the vehicle and most do their own mantainance of such.So most of them know what they have., not what the computer data says. It took me less than 15 minutes to find the part for my Ford (including registering on Autozone web) using their data!!! So what is this telling you. Especially when I had never used their data base, I CAN FIND THE CORRECT PART. I have no problem dealing with the younger generation when needing parts, have a met many young people that are extremely informed on what they are doing. STUPID knows no bounds regardless of age. And to set you straight on my action at store,,I have never been disrespectful to anyone. You did not read in my post where I told the person how stupid or inept he or she was. I politely informed sale person that I would go to NAPA to get the fuel pump I need. And I would give Autozone lots of "free advertizement" which I have, resulting from my post.

One of the main problems is that some, do not understand what they read and don't listen to the voice of experience, so therefore how can they truely expect to help others!!!!

I have been on the otherside of the counter and have dealt with the consumer more years than you are old. When you had the problem with customer, did you ever consider cross referencing you data with another source???? I'll bet not!!

Your right, I didn't look for anything else because this man "knew" what he had and I even read back to him what I was looking up and the info was "correct." I'm sorry I made the assumption about age, that is how most people feel about it. But even if I don't work for Auto Zone, I still don't believe that because you had one bad experience with that parts store, means that the rest of them are like that. There are good parts people out there and everyone at the store I work for, try their best and we treat every customer how we would want to be treated. Theres no reason for you to come on this board and "vent" your anger about someone who can't defend themselves, there is always 2 sides to a story. Almost seems childish.

Webb, this was not the first time for screw up by Autozone, when you are very specific on what you need, I called before I went to pickup parts, had a truck broke down 250 miles away out in the middle of nowhere, with horse trailer 5 horses and 2 adults 3 kids, you are very careful on getting parts that you need to get job done and vehicle on the road again.Had a list and checked it more than twice...Ok I get down there and guess what some of the wrong parts. Just lucky caught owner of local parts house in cafe close to his store... this is on Saterday afternoon (parts store close here in the afternoon in small out of the way places).

I did not vent my anger!!

Anger is: coming back from doing a job that you felt was right and some young protester(not even dry behind the ears) spits in you face and calls you all kinds of names.

Anger is: not being able to grab his little a$$ drag him on the airplane, fly him back to where people are fighting to have the RIGHTS that mine and others family fought for and lost thier lives so he would have the right to speak freely and protest!!

Anger is: Coming up on your sister team in the jungle of Souteast Asia, skinned alive, and tortured and dead, and knowing that there is nothing you can do!!

Anger is: Some doped up druggy wants to know what is like to kill someone and he shoots your 22 year old son in the face, blowing away half his head. And you have to let the system do their job.Where the criminal has more rights than the victim!!!

I don't get angry anymore, just frustrated

Just a guess, but you started with Autozone because you figured the pump would be cheaper right?
Parts people who really know something about cars cost money.
You're lucky, I wish we had a NAPA around here to go to. I'm willing to pay more but I don't have any options.

Ludwig, nope on going to Autozone cause it was cheaper it was "open". I deal with Special Olypmics and track season started, was at track practice which ended at 8pm, so figured I would get fuel pump on my way home, no need making extra trip to town. I will wait untill I need something else in town before I get pump. Thanks

Had a 68 big block corvette one time, foolishly went to auto zone looking for a kit for a 750 dual line holley carb. After stating what the car was, the first question from the counter person was " Is that 4, 6, or 8 cylinders sir? "

Might see what parts they can get you for an '83 Vette.*

[* For those who don't know, there was no Corvette designated as a 1983 year model. There were the 1982 models, and some 1984 models were produced in calendar year 1983, but there were no 1983 year-model Corvettes.]

Keith, I know what your problem is. LOL. You need to make sure you always talk to only one or 2 guys when you go to a parts store, but you first have to train them to know how to find your type of parts. Thats what I do at the only parts store we have in town, its and O'reillys. My biggest problem is about the time I get one trained the guy quits and gets a job some place else.

Morning Rich, LOL....The biggest problem was, that I went to Autozone, was late, going home from Special Olypmics tract practice. I thought I would get the fuel pump I needed on my way home. Sure was a waste of my time....Not only did I not get my part, But had to wait 5 to 10 minutes for the individual to get off the phone, this was after he started looking up my info...Not only lacking needed background knowledge (Stupid) but Rude also.

I don't think stupid is the correct term. Ignorance would be a better description. They only know what the computer tells them. Most of the counter persons don't have any mechanical knowledge. Many of them were born after your truck was built. Maybe if you would explain what you need instead of calling him stupid he would have tried to be more helpful. The customers attitude makes a big difference in the service he gets. The computer program is probably written wrong, that's not his fault. But that is the only information he has to work with. If he hangs in there experience could make him the best parts man ever.

Scott, for one thing I called no one stupid at the time, went thur the complete question and answer period, and did not get mad or upset. Also had the truck sitting right outside. Even had them look up older truck with same engine., they seem to have a hard time even doing that. I guess the only mistake I made was GOING TO AUTOZONE. And just because someone makes min. wage shouldn't effect their mentality or SMARTS.

Funny thing I just came back from Autozone online shopping found the correct mechanical fuel pump....Gees that was really hard. I guess if we increase their wages we will also increase their intelligence....We could be so lucky

Keith, you got it backwards. You don't raise the pay for idiots; but you (a) raise the hiring standards, so that only qualified people apply [or so that the UNqualified are weeded out during the hiring process], and then (b) you pay these people what they're worth in order to keep them. I would suggest an ASE certification in auto parts as a minimum hiring qualification [easy for ME to say, since I've been ASE certified since 1997]. That would also be an incentive for dealership parts personnel to get certified, as it would open up other job opportunities for them as well...and we've ALL run into unqualified personnel at the parts counter on the dealership level.

When a person chooses a career, they should at least be qualified to do the job. You wouldn't want your gall bladder removed by someone who didn't know (a) surgery or (b) your medical history; and neither should someone expect to be a parts person who doesn't know (a) parts and (b) vehicle history, at least over the past 40 years.

That's just MY opinion; YOUR mileage may vary, void where prohibited, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

Around here I am really lucky to have four parts stores available to me that have personel who are either former professional mechanics or were raised on farm machinery or like to mess with mechanical stuff as a hobby. These choices do not include O'Reilleys. O'Reilleys has a good supply of parts and usually I can get the part there if no one else has it but I don't have much confidence in the guy behind the counter when he asks me if my car is a gas or a diesel when I'm asking for spark plugs. Places like AutoZone are the "McParts" stores..."ya want fries wit dat?" They get what they pay for, which usually is entry-level counter help. When AZ first came to this area, I applied for a store manager position. Got thru the interview just fine, but they weren't willing to pay me as a STORE MANAGER what I was making as a COUNTERMAN in the local Ford dealership. So I stayed where I was, and they evidently got what they paid for...unfortunately for their customers. Back then, AZ was a part of Malone and Hyde, a GROCERY chain...which meant that MERCHANDISING was more important to them than CUSTOMER SERVICE. Not sure if it's the same now, but I suspect nothing's changed.

Parts people are really stupid !

That's why WE work for such a low wage and put up with all the idiots who don't know their make model and year.

These computerized parts catalogs are full of errors. The people who are smart enough to design them have no clue of one end of a car from another. I like the old fashioned books much better they had alot of more usfull information and interchanges.

Service is only as good as the folks you hire. NAPA here didn't know what brake lines were last time I was in looking for one.

Don't know what the kid was looking up, but using their computer, I had no problem finding the mechanical fuel pumps on the Auto-zone computer. $18 if you're interested.

I agree, half the time I just turn the computer around and punch it in myself - point to the part and tell them go get it.

Point is, they are a parts store, don't expect them to diagnose your car for you.

My experience with NAPA is that you better have the part in your hand because you won't be able to catch their key errors due to the way they block the screens as they look it up.

I know how to deal with the chain stores and still get the right part. What you do is go onto the chain store's website, look up the part yourself, get the correct part number, look at the picture of the part and go to the chain store with this information. Then make sure they look it up and check to make sure you are getting the part number you found when you looked it up. Since doing that I haven't got an incorrect part yet and I end up knowing more than the parts guy.

some auto parts stores are doing the same as other businesses, hiring the cheapest part possible. Either you get young high school or college kids that are over educated on techno crap and a whiz with pc's but all they know about mechanics is to put a key and gas in a vehicle, there parents didnt teach them the basics so you get total dumbfoundedness from them. Or ( no offense) they hire retired people that know exactly what you need and are so interesting to visit with, but they cant find the part cause they dont know how to look up the location on the PC. What will happen in this world if there is ever some freaky pc virus attack that shuts down ALL PC's that have access to the internet for a month or two.

It's overdoing the computer is what it is. The brain is unplugged in that case. The poor dude behind the counter isn't paid enough to think. I was in an Advance Auto one time and they couldn't process my sale because the computer was down. I had the part in one hand and the right cash in the other and still the dude said they couldn't sell me that part because the 'puter was down. I ended up leaving the money on the counter so they could put it in later on. Sometimes the chains "goof up" and get someone good in parts. I remember a Central tractor store a few years ago, they had a gal in parts that was real sharp. She could get you what you needed with only a little bit to go on. She really knew her stuff, must have grown up on a farm. Unfortunately she was the only one there who knew what was going on.

On the other side, local parts guy,who recently passed away,I was in his store about 20 years ago with Dad to get a U-joint for an old 68 Chevy truck we hauled seed with. The guy asked him what color it was, went back got the u-joint and we left assured it was the right one.It was!

My stepsister's father bought one rotor for her car and left me to go out and purchase another. No problem until I got to Advance Auto and gave them the part number and said go get it. They needed to know the model, year, motor, and I think mileage. All I knew was the car is red and the part number. After about 20 minutes I left with the rotor.

Same chain store won't get my business anymore either and most every one of them hires incompetent idiots and poor support system. I got brake cylinders and drums home and should have knew better to pull them out of box to compare at store before leaving but nope. They gave me wrong cylinders and I took old ones along when returning wrong new ones and the idiots couldn't see they were wrong and said all the ones on shelves are the same as new ones and the right ones according to their puters. I said WRONG WRONG WRONG... They ALL were boxed wrong. What bozos. Had to take calipers along and show them new brake drums were wrong also and not turned out enough. Got tired of arguing with moron wanna be parts stores and got a refund and went down the road to get the RIGHT parts at a REAL parts store. Keep your blood pressure down and stay out of those other places.

They could eliminate those people, turn the monitors around, let us punch in our info and get our parts. We are lucky we've got a decent parts store in town with competent people. CalJim

All of these guys have websites you can enter your vehicle [just like they do] and look up the part #s. I think even Advance and Auto-Zone can tell you if its in stock at your local store. I try to use this to make sure they have the parts and I get the right thing when I get there plus also comparing online prices.

Sounded like metal on metal. Just one example of the problems that I had with their stuff. I agree that NAPA is probably the best and then Advance. I will avoid AZ when I can.

Down here, Napa's probly the best, Advance is next, followed by Autozone. Although it's like Russian roulette. All depends on which one you get.....

What the computors or the Idiots running them... I think 99% of these parts persons, if you could take their brain out and roll it down the edge of a razor blade, would be like rolling a bee bee down a freeway....just my two cents

If you have such a problem with them, why don't you contact somebody that might be able to do something about it instead of complaining to everybody else. And if you think your just the perfect parts man, I heard they are probably taking applications.

I've did my share of providing parts to indidviduals over the years, and did not need the computor to do so either, also min. wage has nothing to do with intelligence, while going to college in OK. City, I worked for $0.80 an hour. I guess if we give them a raise it will increase the IQ level also.

I guess when one voices their opinion it is complaining, Seems like that is what I fought for while employed for Uncle Sam, FREEDOM OF SPEACH... what ya think?

Give the "parts" guys a break. They are min. wage/first job types in many cases, hired to run a computer that give the prompts that make no sense such as "auto or manual" when you want a windshield wiper blade. There is a similar system in place at a local trailer rental outfit. Fortunately, there is a local parts house that has real parts folks behind the counter so I avoid the AutoZone places.
