Now, this is plain weird (to my ol' pee brain).

I need some oats seed, right? I've called every darned elevator within 50 miles and nobody stores plain old field run oats any more.

Gotta buy the sacked, certified stuff at $12.70 cwt. Heck, that's over $4 a bushel fer oats!!

Guess I'm gettin' old.

If that's the case, I wonder what they charge fer oats that have already been processed by the horse?

We raise oats every year. In fact, my county, Hamilton, is the largest oats producting county for grain in Texas. We have an abundance of seed oats for 3-4 a bushel. But that is true, the grain you cut and sell for 1-2$ a bushel is resold to you at 4 a bushel at planting time. Wish the days of 3 something a bushel oats was here again, then we could make some money. Been trying to diversify, going into some beans, but with our climate it is risky every year.

Doesn't the High Plains Journal or some other farm paper cover your area and have seed ads? Ask around local what kind what works the best for hay and forget about selling them to a elevator. Yep, seed is high and got to where we only grew them for hay or horse feed and were lucky if we got bumper crop off them once in ten years with decent weather or no hail so that's why many quit growing them. Asked neighbor what kind of oats he was planting a while back and I had never heard of them before. Store some for seed and and you'll have to treat them and have license for that stuff too. It never stops. lol.

Yep, it's that way here too....You pay over 12 bucks a bag, then cut them and sell them for $1.*) a bushel. Then You gotta pay to truck them 60 miles to the only elevator that will take 'em. It's easier and a lot cheaper to just bale 'em up with the alfalfa. The horses love 'em.

I wish I could get them for that. 64 lb. bag of certified seed oats (treated with raxil) is $13.50 here.

Allen,
I think (KEH)has a good answer for your problem on find-in oats to sow. We have a farmer in our area that grows it every year. Has a ad in the local paper.
He cleans and bagged the oats for $4.50 per bushel. Not to many raise the oats in this area. I use too but it was getting hard to find a elevator that would take it. Last time I sowed oats I had a near buy farmer that was buying it right off the field as I was harvesting it.
Gave me more for it than what the elevator give.
I didn"t have to haul it. Hope you find some Allen. Good luck. Mike

I just planted a new pasture two saturdays ago, used oats for cover. $8.95 a 50 lb. bag! HOLY CRAP! I was figuring about half that, that'll teach me to check my prices more often. I just checked that pasture this afternoon, oats are about 2 inches tall already, must be where the extra cost comes from.

That's the way it is here too. you either know a farmer that grows some or you pay for "seed" Hardly nobody grows oats here no more and if they do they cut them for hay. third party image

Allan,

Try another farmer, maybe they still have some stored. Local state ag sale paper allows farmers to list oats, etc, for feed so they don't have to be germination tested.

The oats that have been processed by the horse are sold at lawn and garden stores. It is called fertilizer, and is probably not cheap.

Hey! We got bills to pay too! Seriously, by the time you take them in at $1.70 per bushel, run air on 'em for a few days to get the heat out, move them to the cleaner, pay for the electricity to run the cleaner, buy the bag and tags, pay two guys $8.00 per hour to sew em shut, put them on pallets and shrink wrap them, $5.50 per bushel ain't no bargain basement deal for me, either!
