Hi, first, I'd like to say thanks in advance because I know you guys will give me the right answer and fast.
Ok, so I haven't started my tractor in about 3 or 4 months. I run it often, but I don't work it too hard. This is the first start of the season too but I've linked the problem to the carburater.

It starts easily (and it's a crank start so it better!) but once I take the choke off, it runs unevenly and then quits, unless I put the choke back on.

Also, when I turn up the throttle, it would quit if I didn't put the choke back on.

I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the carb, or even possibly the gas lines.

Again, thanks for your help! And thanks to JMS/MN for this answer.

PS: I reposted because I think there is something wrong with the carbs setting, but I'm going to do a fuel line test later. And heres JMS/MN's answer, maybe it'll help the rest to find the problem:

Definately not getting enough fuel if you need to choke it to keep running. Could be small dirt particles in the jets. Doesn't hurt to boil them in plain water to get passages and jets clean. Also, remove the sediment bulb assembly, find a plastic tube you can force into the inlet (part screwed into the tank), and cut the tube about an inch high. Keeps the sediment on the bottom of the tank from getting into the fuel system.

Yeah, the tractor is home made, but the engine is from a mid '40's Farmall, the carb is a Zenith. I hope that can help y'all, and thanks for the replies already!!!

Could be several problems. make sure you have adequate fuel to the carb by opening the tank valve and then opening the drain plug on the bottom of the carb. I fuel gushes continuously from the bottom of the carb for at least 30 seconds, you have adequate fuel supply. The fact that it will run with the choke on makes me think that you may have a intake manifold leak and/or a leak in the carburetor to intake manifold connect flange. Make sure they are tight and leak free. It they are OK, then your float setting could be too low or you carb could have dirty metering passages, in which case it's time for a good cleaning.

I used to have problems with all my carburated engines when they sat a while. Gas gets gummy and it doesn't run well. I've put in a shut-off valve in all of them, run them out of gas before they sit for a while. Pretty much cured my carb problems since I usually put in some fresh gas when I start it next time. You can get a shut off for a few bucks, saves a lot of aggrevation.

I had a simmilar problem two years ago-- one of the kids was fooling around and dropped a popsicle stick in the gas tank! Is got gas logged and setteled over the fuel bowl inlet. Try some compressed air thru the fuel line NOT INTO THE CARB, but from the carb end of the line twards the tank-low pressure. Mabe something will come out.

Your carb needs cleaning. Or...you could take a can of B-12 or Techron and dump it into the gas tank and see if it saves you a cleaning. But...it's definately the carb being varnished up...Cosmetic spraying with a carb cleaner won't do it. If the B-12 won't work, then the carb has to come apart.

Know what tractor your working on would help so we can answer you better. If the crab has a drain plug at the bottom remove it and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas. If you do the your carb needs to be rebuilt. If you don't then you need to check the fuel line, sediment bowl. If all is good there then its back to a carb rebuild because the float is sticking
