Monsanto recently announced, in California, that Roundup ready alfalfa was availiable. Usual warnings about not selling hay to countries that banned genetically modified crops. Would make growing alfalfa a little more attractive here in the Southeast.

Been to several extension programs that discussed this this last winter. Mich State has probably done more research on this than anybody,. So far they say after only two years of research that there was no advantage over convetional herbicide use. The advantage would obviously be where there are real invasive weeds that cannot be controlled otherwise and premiums paid for weed free hay and also time will tell if if will maintian a better alfalfa stand at 4 years +. Paul was incorrect to say you need to plant extra seed, you do need to spray the new seeding to kill the non round up resisitant seedlings.

I would not plant any RR anything.I have read that in testing RR corn,4000 samples had failed to pick up 7 or 8 minerals.I do not have proof of this but anyhow the stuff that God created and put here is good enough for me. Who knows what the final outcome will be from genetically modified seed and crops? This is only my opinion.

I do not believe in any of the modified crops and do not want roundup ready. Got some acidentaly 2 year ago, ordered conventional and due to death in family friend picked up and planted beans and after they were planted told me. Went back to dealer about it, told him I didn't want the RR ready and ordered conventional, said they only handle RR, (Had bought conventional there before there and sell my grain there), Last year I had all seed corn left from carry over from year before that I could not get planted because of wet weather so I had all my conventional seed, This year I bought my seed beans from some place else. Also do not believe in Roundup as it will work in possibly 1 year out of 5 for me as has been since introduction, both custom applied or me doing it

Ol Cheif,
Do you have a source on that information? That would be interesting reading, even though we don't plant RR corn. Thanks,

My local co-op asked me if I wanted him to order me any RR alfalfa seed back late last fall. Price was $7.49 a pound. Somehow I just cant see putting that kind of money into alfalfa seed. Maybe if pure alfalfa was paying a real premium over alfalfa/grass mix but not in a one price market.

Dairymen like pure stands of alfalfa. They rotate it into corn after three years.

Oh without a doubt, most of my dairy customers would love for me to grow pure alfalfa. Its just they dont want to PAY me for growing pure alfalfa. Its a one price market here. The horse market sets the price, and the dairy industry (locally) has to pay it or pay the freight to truck in pure alfalfa. Most of them choose to buy the mix.

I hear ya. they don't want to pay for it standing either. They only want to pay $15/acre over cash rent price for a whole season of cutting!

I'm a dairyman and wouldn't buy or grow any kind of alfalfa if my life depended on it. I like my bottom line alot better since I stopped messing around with alfalfa.

Birdsfoot trefoil and/or Alice White clover with improved varieties of ryegrass, fescue, and orchard grass. They cost about 1/3 less to grow and maintain. Yield is about the same. Protien is about the same with higher energy levels and better digestability. I rotate every 3-4 years with 2 years of corn or BMR Sorgrum/Sudan grass.

Add to that - a certan % of seed is _not_ roundup ready, so you must plant 10% (or so) extra seed to make up for what you kill off.

I can't comprehend how it looks good to anyone, but alfalfa is a good rotational minor crop here, probably different for others.

You can be sure it will make a profit for Monsato and not the farmer.
