The main value in a sheppard engine will it or its parts work to repair a tractor they ARE expensive. The tractor engines are large long stroke engines. If its small it might be a life boat engine.

I was offered a Shepard tractor this winter an SD3 I think, supposedly would run but hadn't for a while and the tires were flat. He wanted $8500 and at that rate I'd guess he has it a while longer. yeah, they're rare but they don't everybody want one. third party image
Even bad boys are just as good as they can be

With the unknown factor you would assume the worst that its stuck,or cracked block and /or head.In that case they are not worth a lot.I have Sheppard tractors and engines ,if you can get me a number off a tag if it still has one,I can give you a little better idea of value.

Sheppard made several models of 2 cyl engines,And if it is the one that goes in the SD-2 tractor they are pretty rare.Unknown condition, low would be a couple of hundred dollars. Good running SD-2 could easily be worth several thousand to someone restoring an SD-2 with a bad engine as they only made around two hundred of those tractors. The 3 cylinder Sheppard tractor was the most common with about 1800 hundred of those made, but they are still rare.About the same money for a 3 cyl.,maybe a little less.Several years ago I bought a model 17 2 cylinder Sheppard Navy genset WW11 vintage for $300.Also bought a SD-2 shortblock about 10 years ago for $1200. for a tractor I was restoring. One of the Sheppard tractors I have now is a SD-3 widefront ,in good shape complete, but the engine is out and dissasembled, paid $2,500.for the whole thing.Good friend just sold a complete running SD-3 for $3,500.Hope this helps some,Im in the Md/Pa area ,they were a little more common here as they were made in Hanover,Pa.
