I have a 1996 Chevy S 10 with an automatic transmission. It will not start out in Drive or Odrive. You have to put it down in first for it to start off and then you have to push the lever up to shift. Occasionally you can shift it into overdrive and it will shift, but sometimes it will not.

Not quite sure of what transmission you have in that S-10, it might be electronically shifted, but, back in the "good ole days" with the 400,350,and 200 Turbo-Hydramatics transmissons, when you had exactly what you described go wrong, the fiber or plastic governor gear was the culprit. The governor did the automatic shifting for you. When the gear wore off over about 50,000 or so miles you could then find the round cover on the side of the transmission (don't remember what side)it was held on by a heavy wire clip. Pry the cover off and pull out the governor with the gear. Easy to replace back then. Or, a person would just have to shift it manually until it was fixed.

Hey bm,
Sounds to me like a blown forward(input)sprag.
When you pull it down into 2nd or 1st, you`re bringing on the overrun clutches as well.
I bet if you build up enough speed in 2nd, throw it into OD, and back off the gas, it`ll jump over 3rd and into 4th. The forward sprag just overruns in 4th anyway. It`ll work this way for a while, but once the overrun clutches burn up, she aint gonna move. hope this helps Brokenwrench

Hey Ol' Pard,

How goes the good fight? :>)

Don't ya think he's lost the teeth and/or snapped the neck on the sun gear at that low/reverse input shell? Then, the low/reverse clutch is takin' over for it in manual low. At any rate, it is iron parts gone bad, that's fer sure.

Also, when that forward sprag goes, they usually neutal out with anything above 2nd as I remember it.

However, the old tranny days are startin' to get a little foggy with me tho. :>)

Hey there buddy,
I have a hard time arguing with anyone who plows as straight as you. You could be right, depends if he has reverse or not. Either way, I agree, she`s busted inside. At that point it don`t much matter where it is. The element applications on the 4L60E is the same as the 700. I prefer building the 4L60E though.
