We've got these two little squirrels running around and it looks like they have in mind to make babies. They seem to be destructive, digging where we don't want them to dig.

Would shoot them, but too many people around to do it safely. Have thought of a couple other ideas, but they would be cruel.

Can borrow some live traps, but how do you get them to go in them?

Any other ideas?

Here in SE AZ we have what are called Pocket gophers. Just One Bite works great on them too.
One inch piece dropped down the hole, sometimes a couple of times and they are gone. There is a 22 LR made by Aguila called Colibri and Super Colibri that is more powerful that does not contain gunpowder. The bullet is propeled by the primer only. It powerful enough to kill rabbits at about 50 ft. Had to get rid of a bunch of them cuz it is so dry that they were eating everything ,flowers, grass the bark off of my small trees, native yucca plants, everything.Sounds like an air rifle. A brick of 500 is $15.00 from AIM. Work great cuz range is very limited.

I have 10 acres of filberts and a boat load of California ground squirrels. Basically any way I can kill them is a good and I've found no particularly good ones. The best I've found so far is in the early spring as they first come out of their holes to 'feed' them. I drop a 1/2 teaspoon of poison grain in every hole. It reduces the population, but there are still plenty left. :-(

Pour a little gas down the hole and light it. It won't make a big bang or anything like that, you'll just have a lazy flame at the top of the hole. It eats up the oxygen so they go to sleep down there and never wake up. Jim

i use a product from ace hardware called mole-nots. it comes in a funnel shaped can, yellow. you put a tablespoon full in the hole, down a ways and in a day or so, no gophers.

Friends use rat traps for striped gophers, I think they use peanut butter for bait

That reminded me of another trick. Chewing gum! No I don't mean for you to chew it - put it out for the whatever you have bothering you. I reduced my chipmunk population to just about zero when it was the woodchucks I was really trying to get. Had to resort to the exhaust hose down the woodchuck hole and that did the trick.

With live traps, some people swear by peanut butter as bait. I've had good luck with peanuts or walnut pieces.

If you can keep non target animals away from it...buy some 'Just One Bite' rat poison. It comes in a big bar and you can break or cut it in chunks about 1 inch square. The ground squirrels invaded my garage and so, I scattered this poison behind the work benches and in out of the way places. No ground squirrels and no mice...no stink either.

When to the World Ag Show in Tulare California in February 2006. Saw something called "Rodenator" it pumps oxygen and propane into the squirrel hole and then you ignite the mixture and there goes the squirrel and the hole. Look in the internet for "Rodenator" and "www.gophernator.com" for more information.
Good Luck

We had an old neighbor that lived about 5/8 of a mile south of us. He didn't care much for cats so he didn't have any. Ground squirrels had taken over his front yard. He must have had a bunch cause when you looked out the window, you could see a half dozen running around at any time. We had a bunch of cats so they must have run short of mice. One old mother cat would go down to the neighbor's place, catch a ground squirrel, and drag it all the way home to feed her babies. She did this several times, but half the time another cat would steal her squirrel. She finally got smart, and moved all her kittens down to the neighbor's place. Within six weeks, she had taken care of all the ground squirrels. The neighbor decided that maybe cats weren't all that bad.

How about shooting them with an air rifle?
