How do I remove the PMD from my 94 6.5 GM diesel? Is there a special tool to remove the back two screws that are extremely close to the manifold?

Kentmore tools has a wrench part number j41089 thant is bent just wright to loosen the two lower nuts. Mark the pump before you start. Location is very important. Rotate the pump to the passenger side and replace the driver module. set the pump back in time, you still might need to find a buddy with a tech2 scan tool to set the timing in the pcm. You need to be right on the money for the best performance.

you can get a heat sink or alternative mount off ebay, several different types, the new pmd should come with a # 5 resistor which is most common, but if you do need to get it off, i used a small torx bit end out of a multi type screwdriver, and loosened the inital tightness with a 1/4 end wrench on the torx bit then used my finger to loosen the bit and screw up the rest. if you need to get the resistor out use 2 small drill bits in the little holes on both sides of the resistor and work it up slowly with the bits at the same time.

Why do you want to remove it... if it is giving problems, just replace it with a new unit mounted remotely on it's own heat sink.

If you are determined to remove it, a fellow posted over on the Diesel Page that he made his own tool pressing a cutoff torx bit into a scrap of metal, and retaining it with a sreel clip.

You could make a neater one by brazing the bit into a strip of steel.

I'll bet that would be a TIRING project, though, turning those screws about 1/6 of a turn at a time!

Here's a link to the photo of the guy's tool:
