Sorry for a second post on pretty much the same topic in one day. I did a little digging myself and found out that a gasser would probably work best for me. I only live 10 miles out of town, so a diesel wouldn't really be feasible as a commuter. A good gas should also work for what trailer pulling I should be doing (either a triple or tandem single, thanks for the trailer info in the last discussion, and within 200 or 300 miles). The two most common 3/4 tons with gassers are Ford with their 5.4L and Chev with their 6.0L. Which is the better of the two engines, both in fuel economy, reliability, and in pulling capabilities?

Thanks again for the info!

Thanks for all the info guys! Over the years, Dad has run a Ford, Chrysler, and 3 GM's, and has had by far and away more success with the GM's (two of them are still here and running strong, one a 79 1/2 ton and the other a 94 1 ton). Since it was years ago that he had the Ford and the Chrysler, I figured I should get some advice on how the newer ones are. Seems to me the GM is the way to go. I'll still be footloose and fancy free and with a good job when I buy it, so I think I can afford the gas to run it.

Again, thanks for all the good info!

Tyler in NY has the best answer so far. It's true, the 6.0 takes more fuel, but for you Specter, shouldn't be an issue. The Chevy will be cheaper to maintain than the Ford, and you wont have to worry about spark plugs blowing out of the heads or coil packs burning out.
Pop the hoods on both, and choose which one you'd rather work on!You can see only the front of the engine on the Ford.
Chances are the 6.0 if equipped w/auto trans will have a 4L-80-E trans which is virtually bullet-proof.~brad

The 6.0 has it all over the Ford 5.4 2V engine, the Ford 5.4 3V engine holds its own and then some.

I have a 5.4 in a lincoln navigator and I like it a lot. Has a lot of power and runs very quiet. Mileage is about 15 mpg for every day driving. It will get 18 mpg if you are on a steady 60 mph trip though. Has a lot of room for a lot of people and is very comfortable and large inside. I think it is actually one of the most practical vehicals I have owned believe it or not. It is hard to find something that will do everything well. I have a F-350 4x4 if I want to haul stuff in a 8 foot box but it is regular cab so it wont haul more than two people and myself, uncomfortably I might add. That gets about 12 mpg. I don't think extended cab pickups are worth a hoot either. Just enough room back there for a couple of small kids or a dog. The four door pickups are ok but the box is so small that is not too cool either. They do not have as much rear seating area as my Navigator either. Not even close. My friend came over in his new HD Chevy 4 door the other day and had two friends with him that were sitting in the back and their knees were in their chest to sit back there. Not a lot of room for larger people. So if you want a truck that can haul people you just about need a 4 door with a 8 foot box and they are huge! If I wanted to do a lot of people hauling I would get a full size SUV and pull a trailer for cargo hauling. Bottom line is pickups and not people haulers, and suv's are not cargo haulers. You have to make a choice. Good luck.

Specter, I have owned 4 new Chevys, 2 new Fords and drove some new Dodges the company had. These were 1970-1999. The Dodges had the 360 and bunches of power. They were 3/4 ton trucks. One would not start if the temp. got below 50 degrees tho. We never found out why. No problem with the other. The glove box door or door handles may fall off going down the road. That being said I would not be afraid of the newer ones. I would stay away from automatic transmissions on them tho if I could. Chevy and Fords were good with some minor faults. No one of them is that much better than the other. If one company was all that bad they would be out of business. Find one you like and get it.

366 (6.0) is a very reliable engine but poor on fuel economy & not much for pulling on hills. Same is true of all gassers.

Boy , did you ever open up a can of worms!!!!!You know everyone owns the best there is....Ford people like Fords, Chevy people like Chevies, And last but not least Dodgies like their Rams..I personally got rid of a very problematic '99 Ram [ 16 trips to dealers under warranty..A few on a hook ]. But you know everyone has their stories about the " other guys ". Try them all out and decide on your own..

If you"re looking extended cab, be sure to compare the size of the rear seating area. We looked at an 03 F250 as well as the HD2500 we bought. Seemed like there was significantly more room in the GM. We"ve hauled 4 adults and a kid to the lake - the seating is comfortable for adults in the back. Just didn"t look like enough room in the Ford.

The 6.0 will walk right by the 5.4 any time, especially with a load on. The 5.4 will get better fuel economy, however.

Drive a Dodge with a 360 they really come alive with a load on them. Don't judge them by stoplight to stoplight. I have not driven one with the new hemi 5.7 but suspect it is mostly hype. I've ran Fords and Chevys all my life never had a Dodge, but when they came out with that new style in 1994 ? they were the only ones with a decent rear seat in an extended cab I ended up buying one and it really has been the best truck I have owned. I'm late to the Dodge game but that 360 will beat a Chevy 350 or Ford 351-400 and come darn close to the big blocks 454, 460

"Mostly hype"???? Yeah, you've got that right. I have both and the Hemi ain't near the engine the 5.4 is. The Hemi will outpull on the highway but you gotta keep the revs above 2500. For a working truck give me the 5.4 I ain't in that big'a hurry

My brother had a 80-something Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 318 for a long time. A couple of years ago he replaced it with a new Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 with the hemi--there is no comparison. The hemi is a WHOLE BUNCH more powerful than the old truck and gets about 5 mpg better gas mileage. I would guess that the new truck will go 0 to 60 in less than half the time it took his old truck.

My brother has taken his new truck to Alaska and to Arizona, both trips carrying his big old heavy camper. The only real problem he had was finding gas north of Fairbanks--most of the few fuel stops only had diesel.

He just couldn't justify buying the Cummins for more than $5000 more than he paid for the hemi. He kept his last truck for almost 20 years and it didn't quite have 100,000 miles on it when he traded it in.

Everything I have read or heard about the hemi has been positive. Good luck!
