I HAVE A 49 IH M W/ 12 V CONV. THE TRACTOR WAS NOT CHARGING SO I THOUGHT IT WAS A BAD ALTERNATOR. I WENT AND GOT A NEW ONE AND INSTALLED IT AND ITS THE SAME I HAD THE ALT. TESTED AND ITS GOOD. MY QUESTION IS THAT ITS A GM ALT W/INTERNAL REG THE #2 ONE THE REG HAS A JUMPER TO THE OUTPUT CHARGE WIRE BUT NOTHING ON THE # 1 CONNECTOR. I CHECKED OUT A OLDER CHILTON REPAIR MANUAL WIRE LAYOUT AND IT CLAIMS THAT THE #1 GOS TO 12V ALSO BUT STEPS DOWN THROUGH A RESISTOR CAN ANYBODY HELP ME W/ AN AWNSER TO GET THIS TO WORK CORRECTLY ?? THANK YOU DAVE 763 238 9674

Dave, That lil side No 1 terminal is the alternators Excite terminal and what I do is run a wire from the ignition switches IGN output (same place that feeds voltage to the coil when ignition switched ON) terminal with a series 10 ohm 5 watt current limiting resistor to the alternators No 1 terminal to serve as the excitation voltage. In the rare event the tractor continued to run despite the ignition being turned off (alternator backfeeding ignition coil), then I add a 5 amp 50PIV diode wired with its - cathode to the alternator.

Post back any question n let us know.

This is a photo of a 10SI alternator with the #2 terminal jumpered to the large output stud.

Third Party Image

The wire from the #1 "switched excite" terminal has a 1N5008 diode in it, and would be connected to the switched side of the ignition switch.

If the tractor has a magneto, an oil pressure switch can be used to power the "switched excite wire" only while the tractor is running (and has oil pressure to turn the switch on).

A 10 Ohm 5 or 10 Watt resistor can be used in place of the diode, or a # 194 lamp, or lamp of equivalent current draw can be used, as well.

Also, see BobM's diagrams, at the link below:
