I need some clarification as to how an amp meter on old tractors are to be hooked up. I'm working with a John Deere 60 right now and its positive ground. This tractor has two wires comming from the alternator (Black and White) The White wire goes to the key switch, and the Black goes to the Negative on the Amp Meter. I'm just wodering if i got these right, or as far as how all the positive and negative connections work out.
Thanks scott

Everybody's right, but nobody mentioned that it won't hurt anything to hook it up backwards- it will just show "charge" when it should show "discharge". One of the few areas in electrical work where "trial and error" method is OK.

You have a positive ground alternator? They exist but are uncommon. As previously stated. One side of the ammeter gets connected to the battery, nothing else. The other side gets the charging system and all the machines electrical loads.

Scott, What I refer to as the ammeters SUPPLY terminal has BUT ONE WIRE and thats to the battery/starter often fed from the starter switch or solenoid where the big ungrounded battery cable is attached. I call the ammeters other treminal the LOAD terminal and its what supples loads like lights and ignition etc., often by a wire to the switches BAT input terminal, PLUS it has another wire leading to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay or an alternators main output stud.

If the ammeter is wired correct polarity, if you turn on lights or ignition tractor not running it should swing over to - discharge and then when running swing over to + discharge if all is working. If it reads bass ackwards, swap its leads.

One side of the ammeter connects to the battery, usually sharing a terminal with the battery cable on the starter switch or solenoid.

The other side of the ammeter connects to the alternator, and ALL electrical loads.

If the ammeter reads backwards, swap the wires between the ammeter's posts.
