I have a 1952 John Deere BN. I had baught it from a neighbor who didnt use it anymore because it knocked really loud and he thought it was just in need of a overhaul. Well, I started tearing into it and everything really looks fine. Someone told me to try to adjust the flywheel for thats what many of them needed after a while. The flywheel seems externally fine. It isnt loose at all. It feels pretty good. So,I just thought I would turn the flywheel once and see maybe if the noise would be coming form here. Keep in mind that THE PISTONS ARE NOT HOOKED UP. So, I turned it fairly slow and sure enough, there was a "PING" noise at one point of the turn of the flywheel. Does anybody know what this is that is causing it? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you are hearing the magneto impulse tripping. If so it is correct. Have some one turn it slowly and listen carefully at the magneto which is located right above the clutch on the RH side.
