On my 88 Chevy 1500 the cruise control stopped working intermittently. For a while I could turn it off and on a couple of times and it would operate. Now it doesn't work at all. Any one have ideas as to what I can check before I give up and take it to the dealer. Thanks a bunch, Cosmo. P.S. For the forum police. I pull my tractor with it at times.

Check your stop light switch. My 97 GMC did the same thing. I was going to replace the switch, but just wiggleing it and moving it solved the problem. Cruse works great now!

Yes,probably the turn signal lever.I've made quick work out of these by removing lower trim panel, lower column plastic conduit (square where the column wires run through),locating cruise wire connector under dash, and putting small(mechanic's wire) through the small hole at plug in spade. The lever pulls straight out, pull old lever and mechanic's wire through, attatch new wire & reverse procedure.Be gentle-sometimes takes a little coaxing, but can be done.~brad

Probably the turn signal stalk. I had to replace mine twice. The wires to the stalk are small and break over time.

I would tell you which wires to ohm out, but I gave my stepsom my factory manuals when I gave him my pickup.

Thanks Mark, that would be my first suspect too, by the symptoms. Do you know how to get the control out or is that beyond a shade tree tinkerer such as me?

Brad gave you the right instructions. I couldn't remember how I did it, it's been so long, but his instructions sound right: Stalk pops right out with a good pull. The trick is routing the wires through the steering column, which is pretty difficult if you forget to tie a pull wire to the old pigtail.
